Hi, I am using MS Access 2000 un split across 5 machines, Server is Win2000 the rest are XP. Using Tomcats advice I managed to get all users to open the database on the server by making all machines exclusive and locking all records including the server. Only problem is whilst a user is editing or creating a new record no other users can open the database at all to browse other records etc. Once record is saved all can get on again. Is there somthing I need to change like lock edited record instead of all records perhaps>
Thanks Nic

I have never set any properties (left all defaults) for all shared applications and haven't experienced issues with locking.

I suggest you split your apps between front and back-ends with each user having their own copy of the front.

Hi, I would have preferred to split the database but I couldnt get the front end copy to open that I copied to the on users machines. It was looking for the back end copy address which I guess is because of the linked tables but no way could I get any further. So advice from this forum suggested using a single copy on the server and accessing it from Access on network machines but (bizzarly) setting to exclusive and all records locked. This works fine actually except when some one is editing or creating a new record another user cant load the database. Doesnt seem to be a problem if they are already loaded though.

If you mean the folder on the server where the database is then yes. Its set to share with all restrictions removed etc.

did you find a solution to this?

I wonder how you have your tables linked into the front-end when you tried that method? if using the drive letter, it won't work unless all users have the server mapped to the same drive letter. Best is link using the full server/share path so users do not have to map any drives.

A main advantage of using MS Access is having multiple users editing data (not the same records of course) at the same time. You are defeating the purpose.
