Clue - If you don't mind..I'm fresh again. :) put them to me!

Good job.. Two things...

1. CIDR is basically a short-hand method of abbreviating a subnet mask...
255.255.0.0 = /16
255.255.255.0 = /24
255.255.255.128 = /25
255.255.255.192 = /26
255.255.255.252 = /30
You can get this by counting the 1's or network bits...
11111111.11111111.11111111.11100000 = 255.255.255.224 or /27

2. In the above example you borrowed 6 bits..

"6 bits
1111.1111.11111111.11111100
255.255.255.252
low inc = 4"

Those 6 bits represent 64 subnets..
2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64...
You listed 20 subnets above and x.x.x.148 - .151 is the 20th subnet.. You still have a ways to go.. See if you can figure out what the last subnet is...
6. What is the network address of the last available subnet? (Take your time with this one! It's tricky!)

Incidentally, a /30 is used on PPP links (in the CCNA realm) exclusively... Only cool netwarriors like Clue, Burt, Lerdalt, CiscoG etc. use the mystical /31...

Mac,

If you look i did do all 40 networks, when i got to .40 that was the 11th network. doubled it and got .80 (22 network and so on). 148 is the last network (40th network).

Haven't heard of CIDR in any of my studies, so it's good to know that "cider" is just the notation

OIC now.. Sorry just counted down...

Did you like that link? The subnetting questions???

That last available subnet, the way you worded the question, would actually be 172.17.5.252
You can start anywhere in between with your subnets...

Burt

Burt, i was wondering that but he said last available network. I only needed 40 networks..... Well regardless i'm looking forward to multiple choice!! :)

But there are more available after .148. If he meant the last one if you start from .xxx, then that's more specific. As it stands, you cannot answer that question. RTF...ah, nevermind...lol

Burt

LoL.. I said it was tricky.. so tricky it even got me..
