AW
We currently have an issue with a Mitel 3300 Mxe that boots up completely with all IP Phones working, however after 30 minutes all IP Phones lose connection to the 3300.

There's no indication in the error logs, however if we do vlan_off within the maintenance terminal all IP Phones reconnect. Could this be a problem with the L2 switch?

I had this very issue last week and replacing the chassis fixed the issue. It is an L2 switch issue.

You can issue the command "period 900,mips_reset" without quotations into vxworks and this will reset the L2 switch every 900 secs. This will keep the ip phones connected whilst you wait for the replacement kit. It will need to be re-entered if the system reboots though.

This is the original reply I got from Mitel when we experienced this issue a few years ago:

Found this Dpar thatlooks like your symptoms:
MN446465 - MXE II L2 dies, using mips_reset recovers L2 temporarily ,after a while L2 stops responding
Problem Symptoms:-
Controller loses all IP connectivity.
IP sets and ESM connection lost. Can´t ping controller.
The L2 switch would give the perception that the System had failed.
If you are monitoring the RTC, you may see the following logs just prior to not being able to ping controller are as follows:

!!! WARNING: System restart may occur !!!

_Upgrade_Cfe: BCM image /sysro/mxe_bcm_cfe.bin
_Upgrade_Cfe: comparing 223064 bytes in BCM CFE images...
_Upgrade_Cfe: BCM CFE images same - no upgrade required

Problem Workaround:-
So here´s the command to automatically do a periodic reset of the MIPS/L2 switch every 15 minutes:

period 900,mips_reset

Note the timer is in seconds.
Feel free to increase the reset timer.

---

mips_reset command would in fact recover the port but only for 20min up to about 2hrs
or vlan_off command
The controller must be replaced as the workaround if the problem persists

Thank you so much for your reply. We will go ahead and try a new chassis.

Yep, this is a known hardware issue with the internal L2 switch. Only known resolution is to replace the chassis. The "period 900" thing is a temporary workaround, but that causes a 1-2 second delay in all IP audio streams when that timer kicks in and resets the MIPS processor.

Hi guys,

we are experiencing the same thing as stated above, but this only happens on a network with VLAN's. Like on our costumer side Mitel MXe on an access port (Cisco switch). No vlan tag on the Mitel side, just default VLAN 1.

If we try this exact setup on our lab, the same happens. But if you connect this MXe to a router with no VLAN's or only straight to a computer, then it keeps working normally for days.

I would like to know if you had experience this as well.

Nevermind, the issue lies in the Layer 2 switch on the controller. Don't mind my last post.
