I am new to this whole SIP thing.

Can it be used in a traditional MICS environment and what applications have you used it for with your clients, what extra configuration and equipment are needed and most of all is this cost effective and reliable?

The MICS had trunk configuration, but the gateway you purchase to convert the SIP to analog would be configured for you network parameters.

The only thing would be trunking (via the SIP gateway Rustymutt mentioned) no endpoints on the MICS. The value proposition does not make sense for replacing traditional POTS or PRI trunks.

You could do site to site but for that to be reliable you would want MPLS circuits. And if you are spending MPLS money I don't think you would keep the MICS.

If you are doing a IP protocol use an IP phone system. Avaya IPOs are great..and inexpensive. We are pushing them out on our small sites now that the BCM is end of sale in March.

I've found the Cisco SPA8000 to be an excellent way to bring VOIP to the Norstars. It breaks a SIP trunk into 8 analog lines.

Hey Call Luke and firefox,

I've used the Cisco PAP2T to connect my best friends Norstar DR1 8x24(yes an original 1988 Norstar software) system in his house in Noblesville, IN (outside Indy) with my BCM506.0 and E-Metrotel UCx 50 in Chicago. They work on Lines 1 and 2 of his DR1. Then when he calls me he can dial 7 digits because VOIP.MS sip trunking lets you create intercom extensions between SIP accounts. So we can call back and forth for free. And while a Cell Phone can do this, it's much nice have a Meridian phone to talk on.

It works wonderfully....he sounds like he is next door. I am amazed at the call quality coming from his old Norstar Unit....it sounds like he is on a PRI with the Cisco PAP2T....only difference is that you get the analog "pop click" when he uses RLS.

On a funny note, he can page my place in Chicago via a page controller I have set up. I'll be sitting there reading or watching a movie and "Ding, JP pick up 501 please" or something completely outrageous (like when he is in his bathroom) I won't mention here, LOL :)
