I was recently given the task of setting up a POS system for a hotel's Bar. They have the Server (running Win 2000 Pro)and two workstations. They bought the system brand new, and when it quit working, they just put it in storage. The server was then used, accidentally, as the front desk manager's personal computer and the computer name and other things were changed on it. I had to reset the computer name back to MICROS3700 and correct some registry values where it said FRONTDESKMANAGE instead of MICROS3700. The problem that I am having is when I load up the server and open the Micros Control Panel, everything loads and checks off except the "POS Operations", well, it checks off, but the screen that shows the progress of setting up database connection just stays up and the progress bar just goes slowly to the end and starts over, and it will do that forever, i left it on all night and 24 hours later when i came back, it was still doing it. The workstation will load up, but it also gets to the same "POS Operations" and it starts to load the database connection also, but then gives me an error that says the database is not available and asks to go into stand alone monde. database is running fine on the server, I can access it with sybase software, view the tables, etc. But the Micros Software doesn't seem to want to read it or something.
What am i missing here? I am thinking that there may be something in the registry that's still messed up.
Any help would be appreciated. A website for troubleshooting Micros would be great too, but I don't think one exists.

is the IP address the same as when it was first installed? Also check the Host file.

Doug

Ya know, I'm not sure. How could I tell what I need to set the IP address to? I belive it is set at 192.168.100.250
And what exactly do you mean by the host file?
Also I have noticed that the Service that runs the Backup Micros Database won't start. I've tried to start it and it won't start up, gives me an error. Am I missing something here also? Could this be why POS Operations isn't starting..because it can't start the/a backup db?
Would the password for the micros.db have anything to do with it also? There wasn't a password for the database on the DSN listing, I found on the internet that custom/custom is one password, but is there a different one that gives more access to the DB that I need to use?

Forgive my string of questions, I'm still kinda new to this system.

The hosts file is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc or it could be winnt instead of windows. Open it with Notepad. In their it should tell you the IP address and the host name for each of the workstations and the server. You may need to open it on one of the workstations to get the correct information if the server was used as something else.

Make sure that you have the computer name and the IP address the same as what the Hosts file states.

I looked at all three of our sites and none have the Backup running? I'll look into that today.

To my knowledge you do not need to set the password in the DNS listing.

Let me know if it works.

Thanks
Doug

Well, the computer name is correct, and the IP is the same as it was before. I found the info in a text file in the admin folder. I also checked the host file and everything is fine and matches there also. Still stuck on the same problem, the POS Operations will not initialize the database, just a steady progress bar that continues to loop around. I've searched through the registry, but found nothing that seems out of order.
Could the database be corrupted in some way? And if so, how would I be able to restore it or repair it without any install CD's or any backups, I don't even have the dba password for the database (how can i get that?) I don't think we have a backup .db file, I will have to look around some more...

I still can't help but think there's something in the registry that's wrong. I doubt there's a way to retrieve what registry entries were there back when the system was operational. Is it possible to send you a piece of the registry on this system and have you compare it with what you have, or vice versa? Maybe that will give me some kind of clue to what's wrong, or at least relive my suspicions about the registry being corrupt.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for all your help

Can you open the database through dbisql? Ops may not be set to run. As well what service pack did you go to / have on windows? Can you get into any of the bac of house modules...ie . posconfig?

I can open the db using dbisql and Sybase Central, however, using Sybase central I can't do some of the operations because nobody knows the dba password for it. But I can get in using a userid/passwd like custom/custom

The operating system is Win2000 Pro, with SP3 installed...

I can get into the pos configurator (i think that's what you meant by posconfig) Everything runs VERY slow though. It probably takes 5-7 minutes just for the configurator to load up and then every time it goes to access a table (ie the employee table) it takes a minute or two for that form to load up. There's not a lot of extra services running or anything, not many background programs that I can tell.

I do notice, however, that PCAnywhere is running in host mode...is it supposed to be? And if so, how should it be configured? I also noticed that the IIS is running, should it be also, and if so, how should it be configured?

Is there a way to basically re-install or re-configure the POS without the original install CD's, etc? Because I am about to throw this thing in the Hotel's pool here pretty soon! I'm still stuck on the desktop where everything is checking off but the POS operations just can't seem to initialize the database (although it checks off on the control panel), the progress bar just runs to the end and starts over, over and over. And, of course, the workstations can't initialize the database server either and only ask to start in "Stand Alone" mode.

Thanks for your continued help...
Please, if there are any other suggestions or things to try, please let me know.

Thanks again,
Tormoni

I also wanted to ask, I checked the host file like it was suggested to me earlier in the forum. everything checked out, but what about DNS servers, (primary, etc) Should anything be specified there? and if so, what should they be?

PCanywhere is set to defalt host by Micros for support (might be handy!) ISS needs to be running. Dont worry about DNS. And to reinstall or repair you need the original RES cd. Check services...is 3700d running and set to auto start? As well run DSM -start. Check in POSCONFIG Devices, Network node that the right IP is in place for the sever. Check in posconfig, restaurant, options that OPS is set to run on server. Another thing to check is that the workgroup is set to "workgroup" Have you run netsetup on the workstations? That will be like installing new software on them and they should work. Finally is the server licensed? With the key on the back? Check Micros license manager. OPS won't run unless licensed..you can through it in demo mode if you want to see if it comes up. If that doesn't work we could take a quick peak with pcanywhere.
Cheers...and at least you have a pool!

Ok, well...I have ISS running, that seems to be fine. (why does it have to run anyways??)
All the services are running that need to be, basically everything that says Micros next to it, with the exception of the Micros Backup Server one....
Workgroup is "WORKGROUP"
The workstations are already set up just fine, i have checked them through, and there is communication between the two, etc.
Finally, I don't think the server is licensed. When I opened up the license manager, everything had a red X next to it. At the top it said something like missing Key.
It says the start date was 7/9/03 and expire date was 7/18/03. I'm assuming that this means that the product was only licensed for like 9 days? But I belive that to be my problem. The hotel manager is at a loss. He has no clue IF they even got documentation, manuals, or CDs, and if they did, they have NO CLUE where it's at. I tried running in Demo mode, but nothing is different.

I get as far as the Control Panel. Like I've said, everything appears to start up
SQL Database Manager
Credit Card Server
Auto Sequence Server
Print Controller
KDS Controller
POS Operations
-------------------
^ PCWS01 - (PC workstations, they show as ready by the ^)
^ PCWS02 -

They all have a green check next to them, but when the popup window comes up that says

3700 POS Operations
Version 3.2.20.474
Initializing Database Connection

It just stays up, progress bar looping around and around.
Would the licence not being intact, or being in Demo mode cause it to hang right here??
Would I be able to locate a local business and possibly "borrow" their license keys, would that work?
Anyone here have an licence keys hanging around? :)

Thanks again for your continued help.

You need your software key (dongle) Without it you ain't got nothin' i'm afraid. As well you need the activation codes that match the license key (these can be retreived from Micros at once you find the key number) Right now you just have a big paper weight....even if we get it working properly. So find the key...or that pool option is looking pretty good!

Well, as it turns out, I had no idea what a dongle was, and therefor had no clue that i needed one, or had one. I called Micros Support, they informed me what one was, so I had to search through the hotel to find this darn thing. I found it attached to the back of the Front Desk Manager's computer. (apparantly he thought it belonged there) I noticed it right away because the Serial Key on it matched what was listed in the License Manager. I got so excited, I went and plugged that thing in and rebooted the server, the license manager still shows "No Key Present" However, the area of the Micros Control Panel shows the Key IS Present, and shows "Authorized" next to most things in the list. But according to the Micros guy, when I was to plug in the Dongle, the license codes would import off the dongle and into the License Manager, no such luck.
I am still stuck at the same spot as always, but now I have the dongle.
Any ideas on why the license manager won't see the key, but the control panel does? I feel like Im so close to solving this problem.

Try this....
Set computer name to "NTWS"
Set the static ip of the computer to 192.168.100.100
Reboot
Did you find the software CD when you found the dongle? Re-installing the software is the best bet. And your activation codes are in the computers registry (and inlicense manager) and not in the dongle. The dongle just tells the computer which codes will work. You should make a hard copy of the codes and store them somewhere
