. . . Jacob Miller, who says he worked as a designer for Microsoft prior to the release of Windows 8[,] says that Metro (which Microsoft now calls "Modern") was created with casual users in mind. . . . Miller says that Windows 8 clearly does not work as well for developers or power users.

In fact, he suggested that using Windows 8 to run virtual machines and perform other complex tasks - those which are not typically carried out by "casual" users - remains downright difficult with Windows 8.

The more Win 8 gets bad press the more chance we get our desktop back.... :)

Im not a win 8 hater. I hate the fact real proper choice was taken away. And dont give me that crap Win 8 has a desktop. its not until it gets its start menu back. (Start 8 fan here)

Amen.

Yeah, I could easily live with changing from "normal" Windows to Windows with WinRT & Mertro/Modern taking a reboot too.

Bring it on. They might have something then.

We probably shouldn't duplicate the Windows 8 RANT thread, though I'm good at ranting.

I am a long time Windows user and it doesn't bother me whether they introduce Metro or Shitro as a primary graphical environment, but they should keep the option to use Windows Classic Environment too.
If they do not, then they tell me that I am not worthy as a customer. In this case I am forced to look for another alternative.
In the meantime, I try out different Linux distributions. If I successfully manage the change, I'll never go back to Windows.

I'm not brave enough for that stuff. I'll just stick with windows and complain... a lot.

Hmmm... that is exactly what I've been doing but not for complex tasks.

It took me about half an hour to set Windows8 up the way I wanted it & I have never looked back, it is stable and reliable. I don't see problems, it is just easy. Sure, Linux is somewhat of an alternative & I enjoy using it from time to time but some things are too troublesome to bother with. Just my opinion

Am I one of the few people taht actually finds the new verions EASIER.
I've been using Windows since 3.11 and I have no idea what the fuss is.
All my programs I use are on the main metro screen.
I can hit the windows key and takes a fraction of the time to find them.
I can right click in the left corner and pull up most of the day to day admin stuff I need (CMD prompt, run, search, shutdown)
I'm really struggle to find what the REAL issue is, after all the Start screen is a bloody great big start menu, it's not missing at all, it's just so huge, you don't realise it.

Either that OR you're one of the silent majority. Whiners are always louder people than happy people.

As a matter of interest, what does the classic start button actually give you that a right click on the 8.1 start button combined with the desktop toolbar do not?

It's just the principle of the thing (them taking it away) and the habit that you can't break of going to the start menu. I can't stop myself. It's ingrained. Plus it just seems to be way more efficient.

But that's the point. The Start Menu is still there, except its now really really large. Its still accessible by clicking a button. More so now with 8.1. The only real difference is you have pictured tiles instead of icons and lists.

Nope not the same, better :)

Just you wait, they'll reverse themselves on this before long. They'll have to do something and the baind-aids we're getting don't quite cut it.

On the other hand that also sounds like a wishful rant. E.g.:

Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar.

Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you!

Posting after an all-nighter anyway. I'm getting too old for globalization's toll, timeshifting constantly to deal with "partners" halfway around the globe.

I can live without the start screen, all of the programs I use only work in desktop anyway so I have no use for the Metro screen.

When I use the native search function I am dumped back into the metro screen and I am forced to click out of it to get back to my work environment.
For me, the Metro Screen is just in the way.

The platform is stable it starts up much faster than previous versions.
