I installed a Windows shell executable on the Win8 machine here, and it sort of replicates the appearance of Win 7 - Start menu and desktop.

Well I'm going to say it. After using Win 8 / 8.1 for a few months, I now utterly HATE XP / WIn7 start menu and interface. There said it.
Love the fact that a right click on the "Start windows button" gives me pretty much everything I want (except the programs). For programs, I hit the windows key and there is a lovely big icon to find.
As for hating the Chimes bar...I really can't remember (apart from the first week or so) actually using it.

So there, said it. Love Win8 layout, hate the old set up.

We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

The Metro Start Screen - Life is just better for me, without it.

Desktop with programs launched from the taskbar works for me.
