How do people feel about an MBA w/MIS concentration as opposed to Certs like MCSE, etc? Are they considered equal? I realize this is tough to gauge, and there's the ongoing war over cert legitimacy, But it looks like I'm going back to school to get my MBA because I want to get into management more and I was wondering if people would consider it a better investment to get a high end cert.

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely a better investment to get the MBA. They are not even close to being equal. The fact that there is a discussion on the value and merit of certification shows that many folks do not put much, if any, credence there.

Another factor to consider is that certificates have relatively short term life-spans since they are attached to a specific technology. The Master's degree will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Gotta agree with Cajun. If you want to go into management - the MBA is appropriate, certs are not.

"Are they considered equal?"

Not in any way, shape or form! And as stated, if you want to get into management and MBA is a worthwhile investment.

Plus, you will be challenged in your MBA program and learn.

From what I have seen they are not equal, but certs will add some great support for you MBA.

I agree with all the posts thus far.

I'm in IT/IS Managment, and when I look at prospective candidates, any degree holds more weight than ANY certification. I'm sure you've heard the term, but I call them "Paper Certs". Most people I know who have a Cert, have very limited basic knowledge...especially, if they are new to this field. And most, if not all that have worked for me need their hands held as they learn "on the job". For the most part, those with a degree, are better capable of "hitting the ground running", granted, they still need to learn "on the job", but I don't have to hold their hands as much.
