I am Looking for VFP Training Videos either that I can borrow or purchase at large discount. I have been in Foxpro since day one through all the versions except VFP.

I am extremely proficient in 2.6 both versions but have found VFP to be a real stumbling block, a MUCH bigger change than when Foxpro went from 1.02 to 2.0 to 2.5/6.

Here in Las Vegas, NV you cannot find any books on VFP at ANY bookstores (REALLY!).
And over the years the 29.95 books available otherwise are now 69.95 and higher and the videos are out of sight. I am a programmer who programs manly for myself and my hobbies and do NOT have a Corporate budget that can afford the high cost of VFP training so as to make millions.

If someone can help I would appreciate it very much. My current programs run just fine and do all I want but I can see some benefits could be gained in VFP, especially getting rid of the runtime erro produced in some high speed systems. I own VFP 6.0 version now (I at least p0urchased every release of Foxpro) but the manuals, as usual, leave a lot to be desired. Would be nice if someone had the sense at Microsoft to write manauls in a more user-friendly manner and provide more detailed non-high tech explanations.

For example, a simpler explainations on the 'Properties' one at a time with simpler terms of what each one is and whate it does and how to use it would help.

Yada Yada Yada.....

Thanks for your time.

Hey wprince,

I am also from Las Vegas. I have to agree with you on the book scenario. I have pretty much given up on finding any. Here is a good link to get you started though:

Also, have you subscribed, or at least though of subscribing to FoxPro Advisor?

HI

I cannot fulfil your requirements of providing the videos. BUt the suggestion is to use the training videos provided by Keystones Learning system. They are excellent for a starter. There are 6 or 7 videos, but the first few numbers will get you thru within a day or couple of days. I have used them. Best of luck :)

Hi Dave S.;

Hi ramani;

Yes I have seen them )their site), but as I said I have an extremely small budget. With the 400-500% utilities increases here in Las Vegas, along with all the other cost of living increases my monthly living overhead has almost doublred in the last two years.

Also, with our daughter (who is Epiliptic and developemntally Disabled and was abandoned by her kid father who refuses to pay any support) and her three children living with use and haveing to pay higher rent for the extra bedrooms, food, utitlies, etc. there is barely enough to make ends meet.

So I cannot afford the $70.00 books (if I COULD even find any in Las Vegas) or the Videos at several hundred dollars. Being unemployed for over two years does not help. I have been selling my life's accumulation of assets just to live and doing freelance work on classic and domestic cars just to make ends meet.

With the tremendous population growth of Las Vegas, income has gone down and cost have multiplied! I came her ein 1996 on a project that paid $49,000.00 /Yr and now doing the same wotk will not even pay $10.00/Hr! Not enough to even pay rent!

And being 56 years old you end up at the bottom of the job applicant list, they want younger kids with lesser experience! Or you are 'Overqualified' for the position. (I have 20 years in computers and 10 more in telecommunications). I amk a CNE but only thru 4.1 so that is out. I am a proficient Foxpro 2.6 DOS/Windpows programmer, so forget thaT, I am an excellent Computer and Network tech, forget that also. So what else is there?

Since I am not Black, Hispanic, a woman, developmentally Disabled, disadvantaged youth, or an ex-Casino worker I cannot qualify for any government re-training programs, etc.

Now perhaps yopu might understand why I cannot afford what may be to you, inexpensive training materials. A $70.00 book can feed the family for several days....

I don't know about videos, but you might try looking in thrift stores to see what they have. Sometimes you can find gems among the litter. I found a Using Visual FoxPro 3.0 for windows (QUE) book for a buck or so at one not too long ago.

wprince & Dave S.,

I have found "The Hackers Guide" to be an excellent language reference on VFP. "The Fundamentals: Building VS applications on a VFP foundation" I think is much better book for getting started in VFP. I am weak in OOP and found "Funamentals" to be very helpful.

Both of these books had previous versions for VFP 3.0, so there may be some used copies available. The Hackers Guide was called "Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro 3.0" and was written by Granor/Roche. Fundamentals was called "Programming Visual FoxPro 3.0" written by Hentzen and I have seen used copies of it available at Amazon.

Best of Luck,

Jacob Smith
