My company is in the market for a new phone system. They are currently looking at Analog solutions, but I thought maybe a VOIP solution might be a better choice. Can someone point me to place that would explain in detail what hardware and software would be needed to do an entire phone system in VOIP?

Thanks much.

So would I, and where did I say an IP system can't do these things???

1.If you want a solution that you can count on 100% of the time, and don't want to deal with any fuss, stick with a traditional TDM digital solution..

ok.. Misinformation number 1.. Debatable.. But again most reasons for failed voip installs is VOICE guys(or poor data guys) not knowing how do build a proper VOIP capable network. Don't blame lack of talent on your system?
How do you think a Nortel solution would turn out if the customer decided to intall there own phone system.(and was allowed.. That is cisco's fault for the sake of sales they let everyone and there mother install voip products untill last year). BUt again we are blaming corp. mismanagement and poor staff on VOIP.

2.Do you know how to design call centers, using IVRs that integrate with databases? What about call flow of those calls depending on its profile. What about multi site routing based on ANI, or using technologies like that within the telco cloud.. What about skills based call routing, time of day routing, etc.. list goes on and on.

And because a new company buys an avaya system for there NEW corp office they must have a staff member with these skills? Buckwheet you are not a stupid guy. I don't know excacly what you do for a living but guess you are a consultant. Why is that? It is because most companies do not have the skills you are mentioning. It has nothing at all to do with VOIP!

3. And if you were a customer who has a lot of money on the line relying a call center to make them money, are you going to rely on someone who read a document or just has a tiny bit of experience. I don't think so..

What does this have to do with choosing VOIP.. Did you company get hussled once and now thinks all data people are BAD?

4.Now to correct you.. Did I say that VoIP can't do these features? NOOOOO.. Because AVAYA Communication Manager (formerly Definity) sure can, heck it can do it in both worlds, IP and TDM.. And CallManager with the right addons can.

I don't understand this.. You are trying to make it sound like CCM needs addons that other products do not.. ( I may of just misunderstood what you are saying here)

Anyway. Good conversation and buckweet I am not just trying to be a smart ass.. This is a discussion board right...

The problem with VOIP solutions for entire systems is that it is very difficult to obtain 99.999% reliability. TDM solutions can almost always reach that degree of reliability.

The problem with TDM solutions is there is global pressure on the vendors to move to IP based features like VOIP trunking and mobile clients.

Albion, have you found a solution yet. Did you decide VOIP or a Traditional system. I am located in NJ. If I can be of any help let me know.
