Greetings Tek-tips geniuses

I am a programming stud but i get killed when it comes to these server/OS configuration problems , maybe someone here can help me , in return most likely i can help with programming questions if u ever need it !!! ... okay I am running Apache Web Server on Windows XP , I can see the default Apache Page when I do in my browser.

but my goal is not localhost the goal is global access so:

if i do my IP address in my browser i get this pop up box that asks me for a user name and password , i don't want that username password pop up box , i don't even know why it comes up or what it is for, i want the default Apache Page of course ... I have been reading up on Apache posts everywhere but I haven't seen anybody post anything about username password pop-ups or what configuration i have that is making it come up

any ideas ??? Thanx for time and efforts , Grant

PiratesFan,

Since you can connect to your Apache server from it seems that Apache is running properly.

What IP address are you using in your browser when you attempt to connect by IP address? Are you on a Local Area Network, or is your server directly connected to your ISP's network?

Hi Wishdiak ,

Ummm I believe my server is directly connected to my ISP network ... this is my home PC ... I use DSL to connect , I got an installation disk and a DSL modem from my ISP that hooks up to my computer thru a USB port , thats about the most I know about networking hardware ... i signed up at no-ip.com and i was using:

which detected my computer's IP and set up correctly ... i'm pretty sure Apache is running properly and that its a Windows XP thing but regardless i do not know how to resolve , thanx for looking into it

Do you have a firewall?

What version of Apache do you use?

Which isp are you in?

Which ip address do you use on your browser when you get the error,
Windows IP?
Ethernet adapter ip?
PPP adapter?

Did you sing on in some kind of Dynamic DNS Client stuff?

And if yes why do you want to use your ip instead of using your domain name?

I am a programming stud....
What kind of programming ?

Hello perluserpengo ,

Okay , I think I am making this too hard , and that I might not need Apache at all. Thanks for trying to help out , the whole reason I am doing this is really because I want to set up a MySQL server on Windows XP to accept remote access ... you see my web hosting people (ipowerweb) made me jump up to Virtual Hosting plan cause my PERL/CGI pages were drawing too much share from the shared MySQL server ... but there is NO WAY i am keeping this Virtual Hosting plan , nothing works , and they do not provide tech support at all ... so I am going to go back to my basic web hosting package BUT i'm going to hit all my MySQL connections REMOTELY this time that way I don't have any shared server problems , i'll have my own MySQL server. I know I know then why am I concerned with Apache , well I have never set up a server in my life ... and in the Virtual Hosting package they gave me , all the MySQL stuff is under the Apache folder so i thought "this must be how its done" ... but I don't think I need it ...

So before I try to answer tech questions that I don't have to in this thread , do I really need Apache Web Server if all I am trying to do is access a MySQL Server remotely ?
Can anyone verify that ?

After I get that answer solved , the question becomes a MySQL Server / Windows XP dilemma , which is what I had in the first place , before thinking that maybe I need Apache to help me. By the way the MySQL Server / XP problem I seem to have is my PERL/CGI pages time out , the DBI connect seems to be unable to connect to my IP address : port XX.XX.XXX.XXX:3306 (which is the port MySQL server runs on) , but I will address that to a MySQL discussion board if necessary !!!

Thanks for understanding everyone , its what happens when your a novice at server and OS configs

Oh yah one other thing i have the Windows XP Firewall and i let ports 80 and 3306 go thru ... but it didn't let my PERL / CGI pages connect ... then i just shut off the firewall ... which still didn't let them connect
