following a guide on the net i was able to create a cd which made it possable to boot Windows From a CD-ROM.

I created this disk mainly for the purpose of reviving dead systems. the only problem that i have is that when used on a pc other than the one the original cd was made from it tries to install new devices it finds.

scince the cd rom is not writable installing new devices is not posable.

Is there a command i can put into my autoexec.bat file that will load windows into a kind of safe mode?

I cannot simply press F8 at startup because it will bypass config.sys and autoexec.bat which i require to load bolth my CD-ROM drivers and a 4mb ramdisk.

any help would be appreciated.

Assuming your CD-ROM is the D: Drive, you could do this:

d:\win98\setup.exe /im /iq /id /is /ie /ih /iv

And that should launch setup and bypass all the happy crap that Micro$oft likes to spam you with, ya know, blah blah blah Windows is more useful, blah blah blah Windows is more FUN!

You get the point. :)

Good luck

will this also prevent windows from finding new devices and tring to install them?

ooh I think you missunderstood me.

I have a cd that actually runs the operating system. not installes it. i want it to run without finding new hardware and only load generic drivers for video and etc.

Ok, now I see what you are trying to do, and I never tried to do that with Windows 9x. Have only done it with linux.

I would imagine that when you build the image that you can uninstall all the brand specific .inf files and such so that it can only install hardware as generic then it should work, but to me and knowing how Windows works, that sounds like a LOT of painstaking work! :)

Sorry I can't be more help though, good luck in your endeavor...

Cheers!

thnaks for all of your help. I will follow your advice. hopefully this will work

From "shown (every time you boot) ONLY IF you enable the "BootMenu=1" entry under the [Options] section of your MSDOS.SYS, or (this one time ONLY) if you press F8 at the beginning of the boot sequence"
This is under the Windows 95 - 98 Startup Menu + Bootup Keys section on this interesting reading website.

The test continues...

Cyberdemon,

How will this help you revive dead systems? I'm just a little curious what you're looking for it to do...
