I had this same problem after I installed SP2 on XP. I had Norton 2002 and their site said they no longer supported this version. The program kept saying I needed to connect to the internet first when I already had connected. I bought a new version of the Norton Internet Security and this seems to have corrected the problem.

If this started after installing SP2 for XP, check the Windows Firewall settings to ensure it will allow the program to access the internet.

Thanks,

I neglected to mention but i'm still on windows 98,

can some spyware software act as a fire wall?

I wondered if it was that.

Thanks again.

What specfically is happening when you try to run LiveUpdate? Does it return an error message/what does it say? Some scumware/viruses will create a hosts file with entries that redirect liveupdate.com and others to 127.0.0.1, which will prevent liveupdate from succeeding.

The other thing you can try is to go to go to Support - Small Business/Home and run the automated support assistant (only works with IE/ActiveX).

Thanks, ive already given that a go.

i've tried most things but haven't really got very far.

the message I get is: "LU1803: liveupdate failed while geting your updates.

Liveupdate had an internal error while geting your updates. Your symantec programs were not updated.

You should try getting updates at a later time. if liveupdate fails agin with this error, you should reinstall live update."

Thanks,

Ross
