Outside buried cable from building to building running digital sets off a DS 30 mod. Does anyone have any recommendations of the protection I could use on the 66 blocks or do I have to go with the Avaya recommended Avaya 146E DS2?
The system just replaced a BCM and the protection that worked for the BCM does not work for the IP Office. Once you connect so many phones it resets the mods, I know the Avaya is more sensitive to grounding and protection issues that the BCM is so I thought I would ask.

Any type of lightning protectors will be good. Depends upon how the cabling is terminated onto 66 blocks, 110 blocks.

There are many different ways to protect the system from lightning.

rodney, it's terminated to 66 blocks that had sneak fuses on it and they did not work. Of course they did not tell me what the voltage for the fuses were. Maybe something like a 7.5 with the ground bar would work?

do as overthebars says, we use this type all thye time and are very reliable!

smokin, I was hoping not to have to reterminate everyone, I just wanted to remove bridge clips and install fuses. But if that's my only option then I guess I'll have to go there after hours and change out the blocks.

You really don't have to reterminate everything. Just run jumpers in and out. It would be like adding a crossconnect.

to do it right you do really need to reterminate the under ground cable as this has a coax sheathing that needs to be grounded at the box end, remember only to ground the lightning protection side only.

Smokinjoe - You will need to ground both sides since you have a protector on one side of the cable for the system, and another on the other side for the phones.

endlesswinter, you are incorrect! by grounding both sides of the cable you will trap noise on the cable, the procedures call to ground the sheathing end on one side only

endlesswinter sorry my man was told wrong by our wiring guys you do need to ground the sheath on both ends, wow will not listen to that wiring guy again!! a star for you sir

Alright I'm going to try the UP3B-75 from ITWLinx if I have issues then I'll bite the bullet and reterminate everthing.

Yea but the underground cable should already be bonded even if it's going to a 66 block. If it's not you are asking for trouble right off the bat. I understand that the underground cable should be reterminated but there are times where it is not possible. Most OSP high count copper needs to be stripped back at least 3 feet because of the twist in the pairs is not like your standard CAT3 cable. Also your primaries are not marked on most OSP gel filled cable making it a pain in the butt if you don't get enough twist. I hate that "bugger cable" anyway. I still have nightmares of when a redneck with a backhoe dug up a 300 pair OSP cable right outside a chicken plant in July....
