I had a customer with an IP50 8.0 system. Started having network problems, and I assured them it wasn't the IPO, but the ISP refused to work with us until we swapped out every possible point of failure. So I put a new chassis in, put all the cards in it. Did not solve the problem. Now I have their old chassis sitting around and nothing is wrong with it. If I need to, can I use it as a backup for a system running 8.1? Or will it require some kind of upgrade license?

If the system you were replacing has the 8.1 upgrade licence you are ok, if it was new at 8.1 then the chassis you have will need a 8.1 upgrade licence applying in order to replace it. Be aware of virtual essential edition licences for the same reasons :)
