Hi all,
Has anybody notice anything wrong with the latest virus definitions (20030107)?
When windows loads, NAV is terribly slow to appear in the system tray. Furthermore, when double clicking on the icon, NAV is very slow to appear.
The worst is when shutting down xp, an error message will appear stating that 'NAV has stopped responding"
I've been able to produce the same results on 3 different XP machines (all have latest windows updates).

NAV 2002
XPPRO SP1

Or is it just me? )-8

i'm running windows 2000 pro and getting the same slow response from NAV. Just noticed it this morning. Not getting the 'stopped responding' msg on shutdown however.

also i'm running zonealarm and when using apps such as windows explorer and powerpoint, they're now requesting access to the internet (when just cutting and pasting in windows explorer or opening a powerpoint presentation). that's followed by requests for norton integrator and nav scanner module to access the internet. after granting the request, the apps hang for several seconds.

Hi Ed,
thanks for your reply!
I noticed that the latest updates were not only for the definitions, but also for the actual NAV program and live updates.
Hopefully the next patch will correct this problem.
I will monitor for now.

The problem is with the Office plugin in the latest software update from Norton.

The workaround is to disable the Office plug-in by going into Norton Anti-Virus->Options->Miscellaneous and unchecking the appropriate checkbox.

If you encounter problems getting to this point (i.e. lockups, Norton wont load, etc), in Windows XP/2000, you can boot into safe mode and make this change without Norton's services loaded. However, in Windows 98/Me, this doesn't seem to work, not to mention that trying to uninstall will also fail. Completely disabling Norton will make a Windows 98/Me box usable, yet unprotected.

We only had a couple of Windows 98 boxes in our office and they were running on old hardware anyways, so we're just going to replace them.

I think Norton really screwed themselves this time. Have fun!

falconx,
thanks for your reply!
I'm glad you guys also noticed this problem. I thought it may have been my machine, so I ghosted a clean image, ran NAV updates and the problem persists.
I took it a step further and upgraded 2 other machines. Same problem.

What I've noticed:
- there is a slight delay for NAV to load into the system tray
- if you try to launch the application from the system tray, there is a terrible response issue
- NAV will 'stop responding' when XP shuts down

For a person that likes to keep their system running at peak performance, this is a drag!

Hopefully the next patch will correct this issue.

falconx,
great link!
Now that the abov patch has been applied, all automatic updates will be ok? Or are we going to manually be doing this again?
