Hi all. I have a Toshiba laptop (8 months old) and this morning it decide not to boot at all.

Heres what happens and what i've tried...

On boot this appears..
Code:
windows boot manager
windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem insert the installation disc... click "repair your computer"
file: \windows\system32\config\system
status: 0xc00000e9
info: windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

So i click enter and another screen appears
Code:
windows error recovery

with two options..
launch startup repair
start windows normally

so i choose launch startup repair and this screen appears
Code:
windows is loading files....
Then it goes back to the windows boot manager error but its slightly different
Code:
windows boot manager
windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
status: 0xc00000e9
info: an unexpected i/o error has occurred

Things i've tried:
Booting in safe mode
F8 - REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER: Goes to the 'windows is loading files....' screen and back to the error
F8 - Last known good configuration: as above
Tried booting from my recovery disc. The disc drive just makes an awful ticking sound and it stays as a black blank screen.

There are no devices attached. i haven't installed anything recently and Windows Vista came with the laptop.
I've had a look at this thread thread1583-1432252 with no luck.
What could possibly be the problem? is there anyway of getting this thing to boot?
Any help would be much appreciated guys.
Thanks

Harddrive probably dying on you...

run the manufacturers tools on the HDD, e.g. go to Toshiba and download their testing software, alternatively download the one from Seagate, it is the only testing software that will work with all drives...

Is the noise coming from your CD/DVD drive or the hard drive, if it it is the hard drive then Ben is correct and you may be up for a new hard drive, which I imagine is covered by your Warranty, so let your OEM know you have a problem. If the noise is coming from the CD/DVD drive then most repair options will not be available if you have no CD/DVD drive. Again contact your OEM for a Warranty claim.

The file that is corrupted is called System and is stored here C:\Windows\System32\config. You might be able to fix the fault if you can copy either of these files over and replace the damaged System file. These files relate to your Registry.

C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\System

C:\Windows\System32\config\system.bak

Any such procedure will have to be done outside the Vista environment, either via the Command Prompt from the Start Up repair if you have a Retail DVD, or from something like BartPE.

BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD).

Thanks for the response guys.

Yes the noise is mostly definitely coming from the CD/DVD drive. I have tried the BartPE but that disc will not load either. It gets so far and crashes.

I think that I will have to play the warranty card on this on guys. Many thanks for your time.

Just an after thought linney.

Can I remove the harddrive and turn it into a slave and do the System fix using another laptop??

Aaron - You can take that drive out and place it into an external USB case (cheapest I've seen is around $7.50 at NewEgg - HERE) and do the fix, or use a device similar to this:

Nippon Labs USB-SATA USB to IDE/SATA Adapter w/ power - Retail

but before you go out and buy something that may not work, take a look at the drive and identify the connector used, e.g. IDE, SATA etc. ...

You can get special Adapters which will connect the broken Laptop's hard drive to another machine.
