Just starting out w/Cisco CCENT 1

Hello everyone! I just decided to start the CCENT Track. I want to setup a home lab. I have a few questions, though; please bear with my lack of knowledge.

Currently I have:

1 CISCO 2501 Router
1 CISCO 2520 Router
1 CISCO 2621xm Router
2 AUI to ethernet adapters
2 DTC-DCE Cables

Is this equipment good enough to get going?

Just to try, I connected the cable with DTC side to the 2520 and the DCE Side to the 2501. Did not do anything yet with the 2621.
Both are on Serial0 back to back.
Set the clockrate on the DCE side S0 for 64000
IP addresses on S0:
2520= 192.166.1.112/24
2501= 192.168.1.112/24

IP Addresses on E0
2520=192.166.1.111/24
2501=192.168.1.111/24

So far so good? Not really. I cant ping any interface, so that's where the problems start as I am lost. I have searched all over an maybe I am not looking in the right place for solutions.

I have reset all routers to factory default and can post the configs if needed, buth what is here is pretty much all I have so far.

Does anyone have suggestions here or where I can look besides Cisco's site or somewhere else on the 'net?

Welcome to the Cisco world!Your equipment is good for starters.It would be a good idea to throw a cataylst 2950 in your lab for the switching labs.
As for your present router setup.Be-aware that a point to point link should be on the same subnet.So you will need to correct your ip addresses on the serial interface (that goes back-to-back).Like the below.

2520= 192.166.1.112/24 serial 0
2501= 192.166.1.113/24 serial 0

IP Addresses on E0
2520= 192.167.1.111/24 E0 (subnet must be different)
2501= 192.168.1.111/24 E0 (subnet must be different)

Note:if you don't have a PC to connect to the ethernet you can use lookback interface that can act as PC.

Thanks for the tip! I set it up just as you suggested but still I cannot ping from S0 on the 2501 to S0 on the 2520 or vice versa. Should I be able to?

Even more strange, I cannot ping the serial interfaces from themselves. Or again am I expecting too much.

Any other things I can try?

I'd make sure the interfaces are up and up first. "show ip interfaces brief" command will tell you that first. If anything is administratively shutdown, just go in and do a "no shutdown" on the interfaces.

Otherwise, check and make certain you have your encapsulation set right.

Might want to post the output of your interface running configs if that doesn't help.
 
Encapsulation? As in HDLC?
Thats a bit of a new one. What would I need to set for that. Maybe that is the part I am missing.

Post a sh run from both...this is perplexing...let's make sure there are no acl's in there blocking this.

Are you just trying to run ping from a global config? You might want to try an extended ping. Using the source address of the local serial interface, and destined for the remote.

but the show run will help.
 
I'd like to thank everyone thus far for all the input.
Here is an update:

Looking at the posting here to "check encapsulation", I did some research into my CCENT/CCNA study guide. I saw what the encapsulation meant, so I first tried HDLC encapsulation, but that didn' work, so then I moved to PPP encapsulation. That FINALLY worked. I then gained a beginner's understanding to the difference between the two and why.


But it is not over yet! I still have a couple more questions:

1. Are any of the routers I have VLAN aware? If so How would I set that up?

2. I have the 2621xm which I want to use for a Home Router. I want to replace my Linksys WRT54G. The 2621XM has 2 fast ethernet ports. I got it to both issue DHCP on the LAN side and get a DHCP address from my ISP (Comcast) on the WAN Side. It is hooked to a Procurve Switch with no vlans on it. When I hook the LAN side to the Switch and then the PC to the switch, the PC gets an IP from the router, but it cannot get out to the internet. The PC also gets the ISP DNS Settings as well. The default agteway for the PC is the router obviously.

What could possibly be the reason the PC cannot get internet access?

This is a great way to learn! Thakns again to all who can post suggestions. If needed, when I get home, I can post the running config.

The routers should work with the HDLC encap.As burt said post the configs.
Your 2621XM is Vlan ready (802.1Q and ISL)but you will need a switch to so Vlan's.
As for the Internet problem you wil need to cofigure NAT.Below is my working config.Just modify the ip address and interface to suit yours.

I am guessing you already had one interface as ppp...they both must be the same. HDLC is Cisco proprietary, but PPP is not vendor specific. The 2520 show interface looks strange---I have never seen an output in that format---I am used to seeing the sh int output like you posted with the 2501. If for some reason that 2520 does not recognize hdlc, then it will not work. I am not saying that the 2520 has a non-Cisco image on it, but has anyone else seen an output like that?

Should I still post the running configs from both the 2501 and 2520 even though now they are working? I will if it can help everyone as well. To answer burtsbees, I didn't have any encapsulation at all before reading this post, but once I read it and added it to the config, all the pings started working fine one I put it on both routers serial0 interface.Just to note as before, though: I tried HDLC at first and when that didnt work, went to PPP which did.

Lerdalt, thank you for the encapsulation tip. And to answer your other question, I was not pinging from global config.

HDLC encapsulation is on the interfaces by default. Glad it's working.

Burt the show from Router 2520,is actually achieved with the "show ip interface"
Newtekie you should give up so easy,that's not good network spirit!You should try to troubleshoot the HDLC problem.
Also is your NAT configuration working???

Hi guys! Here is the latest update:
Id like to yet again thank you all for the perseverance in helping me out. With regards to the NAT on the 2621xm, the config lines that Minue gave me worked! I was able to get internet thru the 2621xm. Very cool.

You are right about giving up too soon I should know better! So that being said, and seing how HDLS should have worked right from the start, I am willing to troubleshoot the HDLC prorocol between the 2 serial0 ports.

 
Don't ever give up while you are studying for the exams. It may help to walk away from the problem for a bit, but don't abandon it at all.

Where are you at with it now? What's working, what's not?
 
Hi Lerdalt: thanks for asking. Right now I'm a bit bummed out as I had to give up the 2621xm for a 2514. Not that the 2514 is all that bad, though.

I have it all working again after a loing struggle but how else am I going to learn? I have the 2501, 2520 and 2514 all tied together with DTC-DCE Cables. Every interface can ping any other one I choose.

The stratngest thing is that I have the 2520 in between the 2514 and the 2501. The 2520 is the clock rate for both the 2501 and 2514. It is set at 64000. To get them all to talk, I had to use BOTH HDLC on one DTE-DCE Cable and PPP on the other. I also had to enable IP Routing on the 2520 to get them all to play nice.

Did I get really lucky OR...

Is this normal? It works great, though.

Hope you all aren't stuck in the freezing cold snow like I am here in New England.

Why did you have to give up the 2621XM??? It would have been ideal (at least a 2620 with a WIC-1T) for router-on-a-stick, which is vital for CCNA, as well as VTP---do you have switches yet? I recommend at least 2924's (3 of them), if not 2950-12's...
