join key error in Access 2000 - Help Please 1

Hi,
I'm kinda new to this, will appreciate some help.
I've created a simple phone messaged db. I then created a form using the form wizard. When I attempt to input the date or time field I get the following error. I'm Loss.


Cannot add record(s); join key of table 'Message Table' not in record set.

The data for the form is being pulled from several tables and only the Message Table includes the Date & Time field.
My preference is that this field would auto populate at time of call.

Appreciate all help on this.

My initial thought is there is a structure problem in the underlying tables. You state you wnat to record messages I would think the structure should look something like:

StaffMembers CallDetail Message

With links from staffID to callDetail and from CallDetail to MessageID.

However, where you are making a form on several tables it is usual to base the form on a query. The advantage of this approach is that if you can't see the data in the query you know your form aint working either.

Another approach maybe the sub-form approach especially for data entry each table would have a form of it's own, and be subformed to capture the information. This works well for client quote job type scenarios.

Thank you so much for your response. However, I think I am scared and over my head. Back to hitting the books and figuring out the pieces I'm missing. After reading through many of these forums and seeing subforms multiple time thought it was time to crack a book. LOL

ps.. The querry didn't work. I feel good that I did try that prior to posting.

From the error message, it appears that the query underlying your form doesn't include the columns used to join the tables in the Select list. Without key columns in the Select list Access cannot determine which rows in the tables to update. Terry L. Broadbent - Salt Lake City, UT

Thanks so much for your response Terry. This was the problem. DUH.. I need a querry under the form. Guess in my rush I had overlooked some major steps. I had found this out by hitting the books and haven't completely tried the new stuff out. It was great to see this confirmation here.
