I'm planning to convert several POTS loop lines to ISDN BRI. Since this is the first time for me, I have a couple of question.

1) Is there still the digital to analog conversion of the voice? In other words, with ISDN doesthe quality of the voice improve and eliminate the static the Norstar typically has on analog loop lines?

2) Is there any additional equipment required at the customer site (from the ISDN line at network interface to the 4PSTBRI - NT7B76AA Trunk module of the CICS)? Or will I connect the 2 channel BRI directly to the punch down of the KSU?

As always, thx for the help!

I do not think there is any conversion to analog within the ICS. I have not had to have any other equipment to use a 2BRI or 4BRI card with the ICS.

Once again thank you for your help.

Can I run one trunk card CLI and one ISDN?

Yes you can mix and match. If you use a 4 port BRI as the first card and the CLI as the second card you will see that you have trunks 1 thru 8 and the second card will be trunks 25-28

Remember that you will need a services cartridge or combo services cartridge for the CICS. This provides DTMF and tone generaators.

Presently, I have 2 CLI loop trunk modules and an 8-port expansion card. Other than the ISDN trunk card, do I need anything else?

Thx

I am assuming that you want to go to ISDN to increase the number of outside lines you have available. to change one of your CLI Cards to a 4 port IDSN BRI (8 talking trunks) you will obviously need the 4 port ISDN BRI card (More than likely the U interface) and you would need to replace the expansion cartridge (that gave you an extra 8 station ports) with a combination cartridge that will give you both the 8 station ports and the clocking and tone generators that the ISDN Card will need. from looking at the Norstar handbook you will have the analog card in slot 1 and the ISDN card in slot 2.

Yes, I'm trying to add more CO lines.

Do you know when using BRI is the voice quality improved?

I believe the 8 port expansion card is NTBB04GD. Doesn't that have the clock too?

Thx again

Depending on your distance from the CO, your BRI lines would provide the best quality available. (I had a location that was at the 'end of the line' form the CO and suffered from low volume on copper trunks, but was crystal clear on the BRI.

Hopefully someone else will have the answer about the combo card.

The CICS has three different flavors of card #3.

- simple set expansion card, analog systems only;

- set expansion card WITH clocking providing for both 8 more sets and BRI cards; and

- clocking card for BRI cards.

Cheers

The card I am using is called a Combination Expansion Card. NTBB04GC

Do you know if this is has the clock function, too?

Thx
