IPO Softphone setup

I have read the docs on setting up the softphone and have done exactly what was documented.
My question is......when I start up the softphone software on the laptop the connect address is the IPO LAN address, how is this possible from say, an internet connection in a hotel room in anywhere outside the IPO LAN?
I tried to connect that way but it cannot find the IPO?

Any sugesstions on how to set it up? I have follwed the docs but it looks like it is for internal only?

try assigning a public ip address to the IPO (LAN2).

You need either a VPN tunnel creating to your router or do some port forwarding on your router, it cant possibly work otherwise
