When I'm carrying out the more tedious tasks during installations or maintenance I do wonder if there are any shortcuts or tips that I'm not aware of to complete the install more quickly! Anyone know any?

As a rule are people creating users by importing them? How is this done exactly and does this remove the need to tick boxes on every single user when rolling out a change that isn't covered by user rights?

Just spent an age turning call recording on for over 100 users with each one requiring 3 manual setting changes! Avaya need to copy Mitel and allow you to copy and paste certain settings between users.

Does everyone recreate their SD cards when installing new systems? We have had quite a few issues with SD cards when we use them as they arrive. The system just gets stuck in a boot loop until we AT-X the system to an earlier version..

As a rule is everyone installing SBC's with IPO's on SIP and/or with mobile apps? In most cases the customer just won't pay so much for them!

1) always recreate the SD Card to ensure you have the correct & current version of firmware installed.

2) Always erase cfg before starting, I have seen strange happen when this is not done.

3) SIP Does not always require a SBC often a simple NAT firewall with no port forwarding will suffice but if port forwarding is required make sure it can be tied down to only accept traffic from the SIP provider.

4) Learn how to use user rights for setting standard options across multiple users.

5) learn how to save a user template & use it for new users for those setting that Avaya in their infinite wisdom chose not to include in user rights & give defaults that are as much use as a Chocolate fireguard (Reserve last CA !)


6) Don't for get the MSN* configuration I Extn renumber tools.


* I kicked myself when I discovered this one after programming DDI's individually on a number of sites

Is there a benefit to using a user template over copying and pasting users?

We have lots of customers with SIP lines without SBC's but I'm told as soon as you introduce mobile apps it is a must. I've managed to get the mobile app working over external wifi without an SBC but never on 3g/4g! (no speech).

When copying users, the sourcecode Vxxx remains on the original user.

For 3g and 4g speech you need to open the rtp ports as well, and there is a chance your provider is blocking speech over 3g 4g.

Thanks Okkie, good point about the source number. That has caught me out before!

I've tried forwarding the RTP ports but no joy. I guess EE are blocking speech then...

We had a customer who was trying to use an EE 4g dongle plugged into their router for a hosted system while they were waiting for the lease line to go in, and it wouldn't work. As soon as they changed to a SIM with another provider, it worked, so you're probably right about EE.

Someone has already pointed out teh VXXX in source numbers + you can also create a block of users in one go using the template

Annoyingly my V9.1 manager seems to populate the Full name field of users & these don't getup dated.
this may just be a quirk of the offline config generator though

I may be inthe minority but when programming a system I always program it manually. It ensures I dont miss anything and also gets me familiarised with the system so that when I am training the users I dont need to keep checking things when they are queried.

Remove all the language references from the VM that you don't require in the filelist.txt file in the MemoryCards then IPOALaw or IPOMlaw folder, whichever is relevant to you.

It's not in plain English text as such, but it's easy to see which is which.

I remove all but ENG and ENU and that speeds up card recreates to about 4 or 5 mins as oppose to 25 - 30, normal upgrades are much quicker also

I have a copy of a default SYSTEM folder of the SD cards (basically every release I ever touched) and just delete all and copy and paste it onto the SD card then pop it in and reboot the system.
If I have to step it up I just do the first step and the last step I copy the folder then reboot.

Make sure you don't have someone else's config.cfg in the folder otherwise the surprise is big when the system comes up as someone else's

That doesn't work for embedded voicemail btw because you need to keep the voicemail portion

Do these files change with each release or can I replace the files each time I upgrade manager?

When you upgrade Manager it will generate a new filelist.txt file, so you will need to edit it after every release you install

Also, probably the best new feature in R10 if you ask me, using web manager there is an option to edit multiple users at once which is nice if you need to change one particular setting on a group of users but do not want to lock the setting down with user rights.
