Hey guys,

We have a customer that needs to network the systems together for failover conditions.

The primary system will be housed at a data center and the failover system will be on the customer site, only being used in a failover condition.

There is a NLAN connection between sites and SIP trunk connections have been established in both locations.

They are only using SIP trunks in both systems for their trunk connection with 72 trunks in the main with VM Pro and should be 72 in the failover system as well.

They have Advanced Edition in both systems, it is my understanding they can’t share the trunk licenses, VM Pro licenses, CCR, or networking licenses.

The carrier will take care of the DID numbers transferring in a failover condition.

My question is: How do the telephones and softphones failover to the secondary system?

Thank you very much,

Mike

After 3 minutes no connection to the main IP Office, the IP endpoint will failover to the bacup IP Office.

Then a R will be displayed on the endpoint.

I don't know if softphone support failover..

Thanks for the reply Okkie26.

As a followup question, will the phones seek out the other system or do they need to be programmed with the ip address of the second system?

Thanks again,

Mike

In the main IP Office you have to set a SCN-fallback trunk to the backup IP Office.

That's what I needed to know.

Thank you once again Okkie26!

Mike

Note that after recovering the main IP office, the extensions need te be reset in order to fallback to the MAIN ip Office. This doesn't occur automaticly.

Oh crap, we will need to think about that more, there are softphones deployed in 32 countries beside the nearly 100 softphones at the main location plus 40 IP phones as well.

Softphone are NOT supported. Only 1600 and 9600 series!

Softphones should not be being used like this anyway, they aren't a substitute for a telephone, not on an IP Office anyway :)

The customer has been using the Avaya Video Softphones for nearly 2 years without a problem, why shouldn't they be used?

The SoftPhones are registered by using the user licenses, in a failover situation the User licenses are taken over by the failover system so the only thing the SoftPhone users must do is login on another system ( the failover system ) and then they should work. I see no reason why it should not work not. It will not be a automated process as with the IP Phones that is for sure. You could send them a email to bring to their attention to login on another system due to a failure with the main system.

It will work if he has the remote worker licenses on both sides, for 1600/9600 the avaya ip endpoint licenses won't be needed. But the softphone needs remote workers or power users.

We were told by our distributor(Westcon) that all licenses would transfer except SIP trunk, VM Pro, and CCR.

These guys have 180 Power user and 110 agent licenses in the current system.

Only the user profile licenses are transferred and NOT the Receptionist/Avaya IP Endpoint/Third party IP Endpoint/SIP Trunk/PRI Trunk/VM Pro or any other license.
However, for the Avaya IP Phones you do not need a license on the fail over system, they will be registered as a "Guest" phone for as long as the system is in fail over mode which can only be turned off by a system reset.
