Guys,

don't you think IPO should have some kind of some extra redundancy? A second power supply maybe? Just like on G450? This would work great on some cases....

Or maybe in a case of full units fail, some kind of a standby IPO? Like s87xx?

Well, i know that is meant for small/medium business but i really believe that a lot of customers would prefer some extra reliability or redundancy...i mean if somebody had the choice to order an IPO with 1 or 2 power supply, then the most's would order the second.

Do you know any other vendors that has built in reliability or redundancy on the small/medium business PBX's?

Anyway, this is just my thought...What's your opinion?

R5 on the IP office has VM redundancy and system redundancy for IP Phones :)

I believe System redundancy is available on 4.0 for iP phones (you have to use an external DHCP source to provide the gatekeepers addresses) never done it though!

With the exception of the damn fuse in the power supply I really don't see much failure in these units. There are no moving parts like in most other vendors PBX (including the G450/S8700). There are no fans to fail and cause the unit to over heat. There are no hard drives to fail (save for the Voicemail Pro server.

All that being said we do sell quite a few spares where the customer can pull out the cards and the smart card and push the config to get themselves back up in literally 10 minutes or less.

In regards to power, the "non-IP500" items can be powered by any good 24VDC power supply - so you could easily make your own redundancy there. I'm sure you could do the same with the IP500 - just not quite so easily.

I wouldn't look for too much redundancy from Avaya - their position is that if a customer needs Definity-like functionality, they should buy a Definity.

like kyle said, we offer the customer spares and training to bring the system back up if something goes wrong.

i tend to find sites under 50 users leave it to us, and plus 50 users tend to take spares and training.

Never argue with an idiot. bystanders won't be able to tell the difference.

I have not replaced any power supplies yet since the beginning of IP Officetime that was plugged into a UPS, except the switch from the 40W to the 60W power supplies for better operation.
So in my case redundancy for the power supply not needed if you invest in a UPS and that should be a no brainer for people that want their phones to work in short power outages. If they don't want to spend the mopney for a UPS they sure don't want to shed out anything for a spare unit or 30% more initial cost for built in redundancy.

The new IP500 power supplies seem to have issues with fuse here an there. Not often at all but the frustrating part is that there is no field component to replace it. Avaya is nice enough to have a great warranty to replace the entire unit but this is literally a 5 minute fix that I would prefer to take care of myself if the part was available. The darn ceramic fuse isn't the easiest thing to come by, they don't carry the particular flavor at any electronics shop I have ever checked

I've had a few where the fuse has blown, and on one I changed the fuse (slightly over rated in terms of current, but not much and the correct fuse profile) and it blew immediately and catastrophically. This suggests that the PSU is faulty and requires replacement (probably the chopper FET gone short)

My view of this is that fuses *without exception* blow for a reason and until the reason is cleared, changing the fuse is not the correct course of action.

If avaya were to provide a spare PSU, I'd be happy to fit that, and ship the faulty one for repair.
