IP500 DS30 modules won't come up after reboot unless you unplug some phones

I have about 5 sites with this same issue. All 5 have full 30 port modules. When you do a reboot when free, or this system looses power, the expansion module 30 won't boot back up. You have to either unplug the digital phones until the DS30 comes up, or you have to unplug them all, then reboot the phone system and plug the ports back in. Once you do this it works great. I have tried extensive testing, and believe it is a load issue. I can have 28 ports live, and reboot and it fails. If I unplug 2 of any port on the right hand side of the module, it boots up fine. I have replaced the modules and it still happens. I have two modules in a system that are identical. One works, and one doesn't. I have not found any threads on this, and Avaya seems to never heard of this. I have tried downgrading and upgrading. Tried the loader version 3.2.999 then upgrade again. Any suggestions?

If you are using 6400 handsets this will happen, they draw too much power to allow you to fully load the modules with them, it's documented with a limit in Manager help files IIRC (can't check myself now) :)

No, it was 4400s I was thinking of:

1. A maximum of twenty-seven 4412D+ telephones are supported on the DS30 (version 2) expansion module at PCS level 5. Earlier DS30 expansion modules will only support sixteen of these telephones.

2. A maximum of twenty-four 4424D+ telephones are supported on the DS30 (version 2) expansion module at PCS level 5. Earlier DS30 expansion modules will only support sixteen of these telephones. :)

I don't have any 6400's or 4424D phones. Here is what is currently plugged in.

I have:
16 - 5410 phones
6 - 5402 phones
5 - 4406D+ phones

I'll still wager it's the 4400s pushing the thing over the edge, try swapping them out if for nothing more than testing purposes :)

Good idea. I will give it a try. I know that on a couple other sites I have only have the 5400 series and they do the same. I will let you know.

Do they have the newer 60w power supplies as oppose to the older 40w supply? (Think that's the ratings) :)

I got the same problem on two sites. I think is an issue with power adaptor. I moved (5) 5410 to the second DS30 as a work around.
IP500V2 8.1.69
DS30 connected on Port 1
Power Adaptor is 60W
5420 = 8
5410 = 20
1416 = 1

Most failures with DS30 modules, have on thing in common, 44xx Phones!
44xx Phones draw a lot of power, that's why they are blocked on internal modules.
I would replace 44xx phones with 14xx. If on a low budget used/refurbed 64xx, 54xx, work fine, and sound great.

Just to broaden this issue, I have a customer with a Digital 16 module with 14, 1416 phones and it does the same thing, module and power supply have been replaced. Rel. 8.1 (73) Now what?

47 years in the business and counting.

Swapped some of the 4406 phones with 5410, but still did not boot up. We swapped the power supply, which was already a 60W, and now the unit boots up fine. Maybe a bad or substandard power supply. Thanks everyone for the input!

What is the make and model of the power supply? So, we know what works.

Look at the sticker at the long side of the power supply.

Is it starts with 40, then replace it with a power supply starting with 46.

We have 2 PSG60-24-04, and 1 PSG60-24-04ES. They all have 24.0V, 2.5A, 60W. The funny thing is that one of the power supplies puts out slightly higher Voltage, and it seems to resolve the issue. It is at 24.56 volts, whereas the other two power supplies is at 24.02V and 24.24V. The one that worked was the PSG60-24-04. But I have two of that same number. One that works on the loaded module and one power supply that doesn't.

Its the same model I got.
PSG60-24-04ES by power solve 24.05 volts
Also have FSP060-DBAB2 by FSP Group Inc. 24.02 volts

I got the same issue with both.
