We are running 3.1 CM with 96XX phones. We have IPTel Server running and would like to use the telephone backup feature. I programmed into the 46xxsettings.txt file under backup/restore files/avaya/mv_iptel/backups where backups is a directory I created for the backup files. When I try to initiate a backup manually from the phone it fails. Uh, why? I see in the server it states it gets a HTTP PUT message but doesn't really say anything else. Any ideas?
Thanks

Not sure if this is your problem or not but you posted

" files/avaya/mv_iptel/backups"

for the server location where you want to store your backups etc. I don't know if its a post typo or not but one thing I see is a space between program and files. You can't have a space in your URL. Or you can if you replace the space with a %20

You would have to do something like this on your phone set: "
If its is indeed the case I would modify your root or create a new share etc, so that your URL is a bit simpler and looks more like this:

"
If this is not the case then only other thing I can thing of is making sure the server has rights to modify/upload the files.

True and thanks for the reply, that is how I have it in the script string w/o adding %20. I do see the telephones check to see if there is a restore file and it adds the %20 automatically, looking in the correct location for the file. I think a restore would work but when the telephones try to back-up thier files, I see a "HTTP PUT message" then it states "other exception" and the backup fails - doing manually from a telephone which is where it states it failed. For simplicity I did try to add it to a root directory and it didn't work there either but that may be read/write rights. We're using the Avaya MV-Tel server app, not IIS or apache, so I can't see/don't know where any of the prvilages are. Maybe thats a problem? Does anyone back up thier telephones to this type server using http for 46XX or 96XX telephones?

So is program files set as your root directory for your HTTP server? If it is not then you are using the wrong path.

Have no idea. I'm not familiar with this Avaya MV-Tel server and see no setting for anything. Apparently this software creates its own web sever. The telephones do look in the right location at that address for a restore as it reports on that and just states no file found. No real reporting on what they are trying to do on backing up however. There is only one address setting for backup and restore. I did try the address just as and it didn't work either.

I've tried sooo much regarding the addressing I don't think that is the problem but I did find something in MV_Tel's Boot Settings (ini) file and the it seems the ability to backup the telephones is turned off. The setting is set for false for the server to operate as a 'basic server' & 'file server' which apparently needs to be set to True to enable the file server operation required to backup of the telephones. Now what I don't know is that the setting states 'Act as File server for FTP Backup & Firmware Updates'. Well we use HTTP, not necessarily FTP. Does that setting control both? Here's the full text file. Maybe we need to upgrade this thing too.

So can you view the files from a browser on your PC?

Well, it does take me to the httpdata directory when just entering the ip address. Makes sense looking at the above boot file under http as the directory is listed there. But it doesn't show a list of files. If I enter the file name as part of the address it does load the file it into the browser.

Why not just use IIS? You could be done in 10 minutes, leave work early and go have a beer.

You're right, sounds great. Can I run both on the same server?

You should be able to as long as you turn the HTTP portion of MV_IPTel off or change it to a different TCP port since you want to let IIS use port 80. Both can't be trying to use port 80.

I'll check into it. Thanks for staying with me on this.

Just noticed a problem in your MV_IPTel config
HTTP Server Dir = C:\Program files\Avaya\MV_IPTel\data\HTTPdata (this is your root directory for HTTP)
so what this means to you is that you need to go to
C:\Program files\Avaya\MV_IPTel\data\HTTPdata
and add a folder called backups (or what ever you want)
The your root directory will be C:\Program files\Avaya\MV_IPTel\data\HTTPdata
Meaning that if you do SET BRURI this would take you to C:\Program files\Avaya\MV_IPTel\data\HTTPdata (since it is the root)

by using SET BRURI you are telling it to go to the backups directory off of the root.

True, I realized that once I obtained this file and have corrected that. I also found in MV_Tel where you tell it to be a file server for client devices (telephones)which it apparently wasn't turned on. However, it states its for FTP which is what the older 46XX sets use and the 96XX sets use HTTP so I don't know if it will work but I'm going to try it soon. I'm offsite so I have to get someone onsite to initiate a backup for me once I have the new file uploaded to thier phone.

Go to 2.8 on the 46xx phones, then they can use HTTP as well. I'm using it and it works great!

gphone,
I am in the proccess of setting up this MV_Tel application and I am having trouble with the http backup and restore. Did you ever get this working?

Sorry to say, no I didn't get it resolved. Everything else works well but could't get the backup/restore of individual phone logs/preferences to work. I tabled it. Please let me know if you come up with a solution.

Thanks for your response I will let you know once I figure it out.
