My client needs to upgrade to at least version 5.0 of the IP Office suite. Our PABX provider has put forward a quote of more than three grand because they say that an upgrade on V1 of the IP Office is no longer available. Can someone please confirm or deny that this is true? Is the software no longer available?

You can't put the latest software on the V1, that much is true. The software is available but you'd need to purchase an upgrade license. I think you can go up to R6 without an essential edition license. If I were doing that upgrade for a customer I'd probably charge 500 plus the cost of licenses. Honestly you're better off just biting the bullet and getting a new system from your business partner. The V1s like to blow up, its a ticking time bomb. How much money will your client lose if they're out of service for a day or more because they were too cheap to replace old hardware? That ought to cover the costs of a new system :)

Thanks for your point of view daIPOTek. We have already replaced the power supply of the unit and I know that they are prone to failure. $500 seems more reasonable. I think R6 has the SIP extension functionality that we need right? Does that mean there would be no license cost to go to R6?

Best best if you're stuck on keeping the V1 is to purchase an R9 upgrade license. Step upgrade it to get the virtual essential edition license for free and go up to the latest SP of 9.0. The virtual license is tied to the chassis and if you ever replace it the license is gone unless you have IPOSS. I always recommend purchasing a real essential edition license to be safe but the choice is yours.

The client only use the basic functionality of the system. Is there a significant advantage to going to 9.0? All they want is to plug in a IP 7000 Polycomm into the system they most likely won't use other functionality (I've tried with them)

If a polycom is the request get a simple analog soundstaion 2w , simple and cheap

Lots and lots of bug fixes between releases. Why not just use an analog SoundStation? Also keep in mind you'd need to purchase a 3rd party ip endpoint license to be able to use the IP7000. An analog would not require a license just a port.

Ok I see. They have already purchased the phone. So we would just use an ATA? Like a Linksys or somesuch...

An ATA works the other way.. It converts an analog device to IP. I don't know of a product that would convert SIP to analog.

Or get a new IP500v2 and swap the licenses.
New box and no need for "upgrading" as you can put it on 9.1
You do need an essential edition license added after the swap.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

tlpeter: Yes that is what they have quoted on though the quote does seem excessive:
They want to bill us for each of the following items.

IP500 V2 Control Unit - Requires a 70047 1
IPO-T RTS 24X7-500V2 1YPP 1
No IPO License Swap Required 1
Power cable - Australian 1
DIAMOND CARE FOR IP OFFICE 1 YEAR SGL SI 1
IP500 V2 System SD card (A-Law) 1
IP Office R9.1 Essential Edition 1
IP OFFICE R9+ ASIPP AVAYA IP ENDPOINT 1 2
IPO R9 - SIP Trunk Channels - 1 Channel 5
IPO R9 - PRI Additional Channels - 2 E1 1
IPO R9 - 3rd Party Endpoint License - 1 1
Programming/configuration/installation

They included IPOSS (service contract with Avaya)
They do not swap but give you new licenses or am i mistaken? are those new licenses?

Programming if no new phones and option then it is a matter of sending the config to the IPO.

They have said that they need to "upgrade" the licenses so there is a cost.

So you have a E1 now? how many channels licensed at the moment?
DO you have a SIP trunk right now or after the upgrade?

Just to restate what others have already said:
1. Upgrade from 4.2 to 5.0 is free. Just do standard upgrade. All upgrades beyond 5.0 require a license.
2. You'll need a 3rd party endpoint license for the phone to register.
Bidda-boom, done.

And last but least, get a new vendor as he is taking advantage of you

Thanks guys. I have spoken to the PABX service provider. He has come back with this response: Avaya can’t provide an ADI endpoint upgrade licence for R5 anymore and PLDS licences are only available from R6 onwards. Apparently something changed 6 month ago? Is this correct?
