IP Office Remote Extensions Nightmare

Have been working on a new IPO 500 system for the past week. If anyone can help out I would appreciate it!

(I know a VPN will probably fix this but that is not possible right this moment. I need an alternative, plus the 9600 phones and IPO 8.0 are supposed to support non-vpn remote extensions)

Scenario:
Main office has IPO 500 with numerous 9650C phones on private voice subnet (LAN1) and connected IPO to internet on LAN2 interface with public IP, wide open internet.
Branch office has roughly 5 9650C's behind a Sonicwall TZ200. Also has one SIP phone but I wont even expect to get this working behind NAT.

So far, I've gotten the phones to connect to the call server, and usually they can make calls and receive them. However it is extremely sporadic. For example, one moment both phones can make calls at the same time, then after hanging up one might work and the other may have no audio, then five minutes later it will be opposite, and then a few minutes later both might work again, and then both might even stop working.

In the Sonicwall at the branch office I've tried playing with the VoIP features, I have consistent NAT turned on and it still does this. Ive also tried all VoIP features (Including SIP transformations and H.232 transformations on/off). Nothing fixes this.

I am extremely frustrated because when we purchased this phone system I was basically told that the new remote extensions feature would allow these 9600 series phones to connect to the IPOffice WITHOUT needing a VPN. This has been nearly impossible to get working reliably.

In a nutshell: I need to know how to config MULTIPLE 9600 series phones as remote extensions in the same remote office behind a single SonicWall, with the IPO on a public WAN IP at the main office.

Its totally possible to make them work, in theory. It works perfect in a lab and on paper. SOOO many variables with routers on both ends that destroys how it works.

It's not just variables, it's a poor implementation of the method by Avaya, we have identical setups with remote Mitel phones and Avaya phones (they both work the same way) where the Mitels work 100% the Avaya's are very sporadic in functioning to say the least, 2 remote phones in the same location is even worse :)

Having similar issues with this. however for us its that they are also using sip and the IPO is sat direct on the internet. meaning the network tapology is set to open internet and this isnt supported for the remote phone. Is yours set to open internet if so how did you get it working. Mine wont even connect.

Can I ask why a "VPN is not possible at the moment"? We have multiple sites connected to our office all linked with VPN's over broadband connections and the phones work well. There are only ever problems if the broadband connections play up, but that is usually down to issues with BT datacenters.

Well, long story short VPN was not possible due to their 4g WiMax cellular internet connection, which turned out to be too poor of a connection for VoIP calls

We ordered UVerse this week and we are setting up a VPN

Just very disappointed in Avaya for claiming this technology was doable without it.

When a VPN cannot be done then remote phones won't work either.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

I don't know enough about 4G or have any experience of using it, but latency will cause issues with 3G connections when trying to use VoIP.
