May be an amateur question, but I searched this and couldn't find a direct answer.

I have a customer that has a 500 running 4.1. He currently has a half T1/PRI with 10 channels active on his IPO for voice. He doesn't have any licenses for PRI installed so to start I don't know how he has 10 already instead of 8. Regardless, there reconfiging the line for a full 23 channel PRI for the system. He wants to know if he HAS to have the licenses and the remaining channels activated for it to work or can we leave the remaining 13 channels Out of Service and all calls still come in. I don't know if they, say, send a call over channel 22 and the PBX just doesn't take it or if its smart enough to have it come in on channel 10.

Thanks in advance for the help.

With no extra licences the system will only allow 8 channels to work, it will bring all into service but you will only ever have 8 concurrent calls on the go, any more will get busy signal. If Avaya let you run them unlicenced how would they sell the licences....? :)

Does your customer have a legacy PRI/T1 card? If so, no licensing is required.

Thanks amriddle. I understand that Avaya needs their money as well :) I just wanted to make sure that if the provider sent a call over certain channel that the customer would still receive it. This is the first time I've had a customer who wants the whole PRI without having all channels licensed.

Bos, haven't dealt with legacy carriers much, under System, its listed as CARRIER T1/PRIS, is that a legacy card?

Just built a mock up in Manager.

A legacy card w/ an IP400 PRI card lists under Control Unit as: CARRIER/PRIS T1.

An IP500 Digital 8 w/ an IP500 PRI card lists as: DIGSTA8/PRIS.

Looks like you have a legacy card carrier w/ an IP400 PRI card. All channels should be available to be put into service with no licensing required.

Thanks Bos, didn't think about a mock up. It is indeed a legacy carrier. Not only was that a great help, but good news for the customer as well.

You should verify with the LSP any unused channels remain busied out. This should ensure normal outbound service for your client.
