I see that Avaya has released four new models of 9600-Series IP Deskphones.

"The new 9600 Series IP Deskphones – the 9608, 9611G, 9621G and 9641G models require Avaya one-® Deskphone H.323 6.0 software. The Avaya one-X® Deskphone H.323 6.0 software is available with Communication Manager. The features include:
- Intuitive User Interface
- Superior Audio Quality
- New design and display
- Lower Power
- Remote Worker Support through IPSec VPN connections
Avaya one-X® Deskphone H.323 Release 6.0 is supported on 9608, 9611G, 9621G and 9641G deskphones only."

Info from

Yes another release and I hope it fixes some really bad audio/stability issues that we have had to put up with on 9611G phones, all 200 of them! Its a bit telling when in the release notes they are actually advising users to subscribe to a special notification and reporting service specifically for the 96xx series phones.

It's call BETA testing... Not sure why they rushed these out... I'm thinking about setting all my ports to 100Full to see if it is speed/duplex related.

I have been reviewing the support sites for the 9600 Series phones. I am having a problem with 9608 phones that just lock up for no apparent reason. However, if you do a group page over the speakers of the phones you can certainly lock up at least one per page access. Very cool feature I might add.

Have been waiting on SP3

In looking at all doc on the support site, the most significant developement for 2011 so far for the 9600 series is the option to use adhesive lables.

I am thinking about making some that say 'If phone is unresponsive - unplug and plug it back in. While it boots gets some coffee. It's gonna be awhile.'

It nice that AVAYA was willing to sell me these devices, but so far this year they have been very silent about a product that obviously has some major problems.

Thanks for the opportunity to rant.

What?!?!?

When I move from screen to screen on my 9608 my 'adhesive label' fails to update!!!!!!!

Recall the phones!!!!

Just thought the place could use a little life - :)

nothing like making a product GA before it actually is GA.

you can have my 2420 digital set when you pry it from my cold dead hand.

for that group page problem make sure you leave 1 less than the limit of phones in the group. if you max the group out and you page from within the group its like having an extra member and it screws things up.

Toxic/Slo, how are your 96X1 sets doing since SP2 in January? IPO, I hear that a patch or firmware upgrade is coming out later this month (3/18) and I hope that helps your issues.

We're looking to deploy 96XX or 96X1 phones over VPN. One partner is proposing the 9650, while another is proposing the 9608. I like the price point of the 9608 but I can't find many positive threads about it. Do any of you have a 9600 series you would recommend? Is the 9611 having as many issues as the 9608?

Thanks for your input...

I have installed several 9620's, 30's, and 40's. They have been fairly reliable. I would avoid 9608 and 9611 as they are part of the same new breed. H.323 Version 6. The older styles are version 3.0 and 3.1.

Regarding SP 3 we were told by AVAYA 3/11, but that day has come and gone. In spite of us running SP 2 I am hearing of strange issues and right now can only guess they are related to SP2.

Transfer using busy-ind keys disconnects calling party on occasion.

Phones ring, but no call is present.

Of course phones still lock up - but they lock up more often if you are using Group Paging over the speakers of the phones.

Thanks for the quick response!

We've got a few sets on loan that we're testing, and the 9630 in front of me has worked well so far. My biggest concern about going with an older 96XX series (non-96X1) is that I'm hearing from Avaya that the 96XX are going to be going up in price, harder to find, etc. I take that with a grain of salt, of course, but if it ends up being legit that could be a problem for us.

I was trying to get a G450 earlier this year was informed they were on back order from Avaya. Reason supplied to me was that AVAYA was in the process of moving production of this unit from Israel to China. Therefore, there may be some truth to the older styles being harder to find as the Chinese gear up to do more work on our behalf.

There is a new version for the ipoffice so it won't take long before it will be there.

I would think twice about using the phones as vpn phone.
There seems to be an issue with the firmware.
I also heard about the same problem with the 9620,30 etc range and vpn.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

tlpeter, what have you heard about VPN issues? I haven't heard anything negative on the 20/30/50 (older 96XX) sets, just lots of issues on the newer 96X1 sets.

It seems that the latest firmware just does not work.
I have used 9620 and 50's as a vpn phone without issues but lately on the ipo forum there was an issue mentioned about it.
I could not build a vpn tunnel with a 9608 or 9641.
On the router itself i saw a protected network ipaddress that started with a zero even when it was configured in the right way.
This happened with a 9620 too (i did not did it myself)
This means that the firmware is not alright.
I have only seen this myself with the 9608 and 41.

Thanks, tlpeter. What is the IPO forum?

I see a couple of good VPN posts there so far, thanks for the tip!

Lastest word is this should be available on March 25th. AVAYA plans to test more diligently in the future because of problems with this product. Hopefully that is a goal they keep.
This firmware will be SP3 for version 6.0 of the 96xx H.323 phones. Models 9608, 9611, and 9621 to name a few.
The expectation is that this will actually solve the issues.

SP2 aka 6.008S for those who look at 'list reg' in ASA was still very bug infested.

Thanks...
