I have two VOIP phones set up to an Avaya IP500 v2 system. One of the lights on button 1 on both phones always remains illuminated. The light never turns off on button 1. The button is not busy. I tried changing the button from a line to an intercom and I have the same problem in both configurations. The phones are 1608 and the 1616.

That's normal, just means that's the currently selected button for when you go off hook to dial or for an incoming call :)

Is there a way to turn of the lights?

No it's always on, you'll need to find something else to worry about :)

In Manager > User > Telephony > Multi-line Options > Idle Line Preference = enabled. Disable to turn off the light.

I think that stops it giving dial tone when going off hook though.....

amriddle01 is correct. When you change the Idle Line Preference to "Disabled", it does not automatically select the item on button number 1 when the receiver is picked up. It does turn off the light on button number 1.

That was the question wasn't it?
The next question would be : how te get a line when the receiver is lifted?
Then I would answer: either
Press button 1
or
In Manager > User > Telephony > Multi-line Options > Idle Line Preference = disable. Enable to get dial tone when the receiver is lifted, it brings back the light on button 1.
