I have a univerisity that would like to be able to do an announcement over their phones in case of emergency.

1. What is the maximum allowed for Intercom Groups

2. What is the best way to implement something like this

3. I am thinking of something like a page all over the phone system that would be able to key up all the phones at once? is this possible?

Thanks

Installing overhead paging would be the capx to persue

what type of system, Opt 11 and up the answer is NO!

Overhead paging is not a option because this is a campus setting.

This is an option 81C, release 25.30

I cant think of anything that you can expect from your 81, may have to rely on the data people for something like this, or some 3rd party "nursecall" type of system. Your 81 won't do an announcement over intercom like a key system can do

That is untrue you can do intercom groups on any switch as long as it has package 21 installed...

Does anybody know the max users per group?

How can overhead paging not be an option because of campus setting if it is for emergency????

Good luck!

Well because there are not speakers wired and installed to all the buildings.... so that is why that is not an option, sure it can be done.

Intercom groups are called one station at a time. Group call lists can be configured 20 users (0-19) per group.
Not much of an emergency solution!

they are only asking about this for another way to get word out... I believe there are 0 - 99 users in each group

only 99 members in an intercom group. I worked in a public k-12 school and we discussed this very thing. have to keep in mind that in an emergency setting you will have students in areas that are NOT covered by phones. Hallways, cafeterias etc...depending on phones alone really won't give full coverage.

Actually 100 users in a intercom group....

I did tell them that lianahite.... They already some other things in place just looking for more options...

I dont think the pbx is a good option for this, there are better ones.....

First things first...UPGRADE the switch....Change to IP phones....Install application gateway....you can then place the phones in a single as well as segmented page zones and page over the speakers. Updated software gives you more options. There is no way to page over the speakers like you are wanting on TDM phones.

It would be cheaper and more reliable to install Zoned Overhead Paging.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Understood. Just giving him the PBX option. As far as reliability, it all depends on the backbone. Some sites have all kinds of troubles and others have none at all. Just depends on how the data network is configured and if they install UPS's or not.

I have one site that has a whole room UPS and that is also backed up by a generator.

TDM is more stable but that is the world we live in today. I have not installed a new TDM switch in 2 years. Upgraded plenty of them but all new installs seem to be going VoIP.

I have VOIP/Vonage at home, but my cable provider goes down so much, I won't bet my life on it so I also have a cell phone.

I know about upgrading and all that stuff, but that is not my decision to make. I was just trying to see what ideas were out there, period that is all.

You can do a intercom group over the 2616 phones and have up to 100 people in there, it is a page all function basically.

I too used to have vonage. I now have a phone from my cable provider. It does support use for a modem but the vonage does not.

I used to have DSL from AT&T but when the idiot pulled my carbons to fix another line and it took them 2 days to get there to fix the DSL and then when they did fix the DSL they killed the phone line and it took them another 2 days to fix I dropped them like a hot check.

My vonage supports a modem.
