Here is a guide to setting up VM to email. Have got this working at 100's of customer sites...
1. Build yourself a Gmail account for this customer. (I use free Gmail accounts regularly) Log into the Gmail account and allow sign in from less secure apps (Gmail will not work unless you complete this step)
2. Log into the phone system. Go to the Feature activation page and verify there is a license quantity for license code 1014. Make sure it is on the network.
A. If you are using the Ethernet port on your CPU verify 10-12-01, 10-12-02, and 10-12-03. YOU MUST ALSO HAVE YOUR DNS SERVERS IN 10-12-13/14
B. If you are using the VoIP port verify 10-12-09, 10-12-10, and 10-12-03. YOU MUST ALSO MUST HAVE DNS SERVERS IN 10-12-13/14
3. In 47-18-01 check the SMTP Box
4. In 47-18-02 enter smtp.gmail.com
5. In 47-18-03 enter 587
6. In 47-18-04 check the encryption box.
7. In 47-18-05 set the authentication to Yes.
8. In 47-18-06 enter the full Gmail account address
9. in 47-18-07 Enter the password you use to log into Gmail
10.In 47-18-08 Renter the FULL Gmail address
11.In 47-18-09 Renter the Full Gmail address.
12.In 47-02-20 check the box
13.In 47-02-21 enter the users email address.
14.In 90-11-11 Re-enter your DNS address.
15.In 90-11-12 Re-enter your DNS 2 address.
16. Test.

Just to confirm that the answer provided is, without a doubt, the best one. With the gmail account we have NEVER experienced delivery problems. It is also much easier to not have to deal with someone else's email server.
