I have used Project for a while but usually in very simplistic projects. Here is my problem.

I have a very detailed project tracking the project to the hour. There are 16 hour work days (Mon-Sat) consisting of 2 8-hour shifts that do not overlap (6A-2P & 3P-11P). The resource calendars show 8-hours per day for the workers. There are separate calendars for 1st shift (6A-2P) and 2nd shift (3P-11P) resources.

When I have a 20 hr task with one 1st shift resource and one 2nd shift resource assigned, Project allocates the resources as follows: 8 hr per worker (both) for the first day and 2 hours per worker (both) for the second day.

What I want it to do is schedule each worker 8 hours the first day and the final 4 hours of the task to the 1st shift worker in the second day so that the task is completed as soon as possible.

What am I doing wrong? Can Project do this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

OK, I'll bite. Your setup is telling the application that you're assigning two resources to the task with equal priority. It has no indication that you want to change the rules on day two to favor the first shift. The terms are to assign both resources equally until the hours required are satisfied. It's split the work allocation equally down the middle. I don't know how you can favor one shift over the other without changing the allocation on both days.

Try this...

* Go to Resource Usage View
* If needed, change the timescale to the bottom units being days
* Do a timephased edit between the two resources, setting the second shift's hours on the task to 0 and the first shift's hours on the task to 4.

I think that will get you there.

Take a look at the Task Form for the task. Here you can divide the work hours between the workers. Task Usage View lets you specify when the hours are worked. Fix your duration first.
