Hello,

I have a Win. 2000 pro workstation.

I tried to power up this workstation, I received the message," Invalid NTOSLoader.exe." I was able to get past this message, but later received the message," Missing boot.ini ." I copied a new boot.ini.

Now I receive the message," Inaccessible_Boot_Device." I can't get past this message. (I tried to run Windows 2000 Fast Repair, but it won't finish.). I have data on this hard drive.

Is there any way to resolve this? Thanks for your help.

I would recommend before continuing with the repair operations, to take the drive out of the PC, and connect it to another Pc, as a slave. that way, you can pull any data you have in it to a safe location, before you attempt any other repairs.

Once that is done.

Return the drive to its original PC, and try to boot from the Win2k CD and enter rexcovery console or do a repair install.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Putting my support in Wollufs favor.

Recovery console. Do a chkdsk, then type "Fixboot" and then "Fixmbr" and call it good.

Thanks for your assistance.

I took the 2000 pro hard drive out.

I slaved it on an xp home computer.

I was able to copy some of the files from the slaved drive.

Unfortunately, some of the files on the slaved drive are giving me an access denied message, when I try to copy them. Is there any way to get these files?(I am not prompted for a password).

Thanks.

You might need to take ownership of the files.
Take a look at this:

Thanks for the help.

Taking ownership of the files worked. I have it backed up.

I am trying to avoid installing windows 2000 pro from scratch.(This workstation has a lot of developer applications that aren't easy to reinstall.).

The fixboot and fixmbr didn't work in the Recovery console. Is it possible to copy the C:\Winnt directory or portions of it, from a good workstation to this problematic workstation? (Since it is backed up, I can take a risk). Thanks.

boston33. Did you run chkdsk /p from recovery console as well as the fixboot & fixmbr.

Have you tried the repair reinstall?

Copying another C:\winnt is no good as it will contain registry/drivers etc for the machine it came from. If the the hardware is all actually ok, repair reinstall (after chkdsk) would be best way to proceed.

Also, have you tried the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility - the drive may be failing

hi,

i have a maxtor hard drive on my dell computer. it has windows on it (its my own windows that i bought, its not installed with the dell operating system CD). i bought a new computer (barebones computer), i put my harddrive in it from my dell computer and it gives me a message during startup on a blue screen saying, "***stop: 0x0000007B etc. etc. etc. inaccessible_boot_device".
does anyone know how to fix this?

this is the computer i bought, its from ebay.

If you move a drive to another computer, you are likely to have issues, because of the hardware differences. Usually a repair reinstall run on the new machine will sort this out:-

But occasionally it won't (eg, you might still bet the stop 7b error when the reinstall starts its second phase after first reboot). In which case, back up and clean reinstall is way to go.

Also, depending on your version of windows, you may have a re-activation issue if/when you get it back up. If its an OEM version its only valid on one computer - the one it was installed on originally. If retail it should re-activate ok.

btw - you'd be better starting a new thread.
