IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only 6

i service a small business with 6 machines (all running w2k).

two of these machines have the exact same problem: certain pages do not load the graphics. it is an intermittent problem. for instance, home.yahoo.com and belarc.com both do not display the graphics. if you F5 (refresh) it still will not show the graphics. HOWEVER, if you change the encoding to Western European (ISO) or Western European (Windows) it WILL display the graphics. subsequent refreshes (after you've change the encoding) will again NOT show the graphics. a quick check of the encoding reveals that it is still encoding at Wester European (ISO or Window) which ever you chose. in other words, the encoding selection has not changed, but you are now unable to view the graphics.

other pages that are viewed with the same machines load just fine. for example msn.com shows all the graphics (and there are quite a few)...

so... the problem is intermittent in the fact that not all pages load graphics. however, the problem is consistent in the fact that pages that don't load graphics NEVER load graphics (unless you change the encoding).


these are the fixes i've tried with no success (cold booting in between):
1) selecting 'auto-select' in the encoding menu.
2) clearing the temporary internet files cache.
3) reinstalling ie6 over the current installation.
4) editing the registry value (per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 283807) to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage set as default to C_28591.NLS

the KB article (283807) seems to deal with persistent non-display of graphics (for ALL web pages), but i thought i'd give it a try anyway.

i'd rather not wipe the machine just for this, but if that's the solution....

any help would be much appreciated...

There seems to be a problem with that website at the moment. One of the direct download links is:

my problem was also fixxed using the hot tip jammiebassnett explained in his thread...for me it was kazaa lite and i wanted to thank jamie for letting me know this...if you have kazaa and your images are red x's instead of pics i incourage you to try this..ive tried everything and this finally worked...thanks again for your professional help

Hi folks,

New to the forum but from what I see, this looks like a great place for computer questions. I have read this thread a few times and tried many of the tricks. The one fix that seemed to fix my intermittant, red X graphic problem was uninstalling Norton Spam Blocker. I had a trial version so uninstalling it was no big deal. Too bad as I get a lot of Spam. I guess I will have to rely on Outlook's own Spam blocker.

Just as more FYI. I tried switching the encoding to "auto-select" which fixed the red X graphic on some sites but not all. The uninstalling Norton Spam Blocker seems to have been the real fix.

Anyway, I did want to add that I have also installed the Microsoft Virtual Machine. So in total, I have done 3 things:

1. Change encoding to auto
2. Uninstall Norton SpamBlocker
3. Install Microsoft VM.

Hello everyone.

I'm new to this forum but i've also had the problem with the red X's. I tried many things of course to get rid of those, and finally i managed to solve the problem. I had 2 Norton products installed, the Antivirus and Internet Security. Uninstalling NIS didn't do any good, so by pure chance i also uninstalled NAV. Voila, red X gone. I installed NAV over again and the images were still there. So NIS seems to be the sinner in this case.

I'm sure this won't work for everyone, but I hope at least some of you will be able to get results.

i was getting red x's alot, using IE 6.0.28, with Windows 98 SE. I tried a bunch of the solutions in this long thread, but what (finally) just worked for me was installing the latest Java virtual machine. 1.4.2_03 is the version, i believe. and voila, finally, no red x's.....

As more and more websites now use flash and shockwave to display their graphics, it is worth noting that if you have not updated flash player and shockwave to the latest versions (or possibly they are not even installed on your system), then on some sites you will get the dreaded "red x"!!

If you have an older version of flash and shockwave then this could cause the behaviour whereby sometimes when you go to certain websites only, the graphics will load sometimes and other times they wont, or the page wont load at all or you may appear to receive a DNS error!

I JUST FIXED IT.

I am running Windows 98, reinstalled and reinstalled again, and IE6 repaired and re-repaired...all b/c of this situation. This old Dell desktop ran just perfectly with Earthlink dialup for years and I only began having this red x/Windows ISO/no pics/banner ads problem when I recently installed SBC Yahoo! DSL. I have been going insane since. Thank God I found this site.

I followed a few tips above to not avail (restarting after each). Finally, I followed two of the tips and restarted, so I don't know if it was one of them or both.

FIRST TIP:

Wow. Here I return to this thread 3/4 of a year later and still with no solution.

I have to state something strange that occured with me however that leads us closer to the solution, but also just increases the confusion.

I still have SBC Yahoo DSL service and still use all the same software from that disk. A few weeks ago I reformatted and reinstalled everything. This time, something bizzare happened: my pages that I frequently visit where I get the red x's loaded PERFECTLY!! (here's the letdown)... until I restarted and signed on later that night. Then I was back to having to right click and choose Western European (Windows) again.

So, it is surely some additional software that caused this problem. Can somebody who's savvy on this maybe narrow it down. Could it be a registry file? What should I look into?

Alright, one more message here. From the beginning of trying to understand this problem more technically, I was convinced that it had to do with the .nls registry files, since many of us have to switch Western European (ISO) over to Western European (Windows) to get it to work. However, I'm not so savvy on all this. I'll just post a bit of info and then my .nls file list and maybe somebody can spot a problem.

TRY THIS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brand new install of my OS and I have had errors on pages I visit. And thought it was a jscript problem, But turns out it was an encoding problem with the western european(windows). Well I decided to try something I have not been able to find on any post. And it WORKED.. I am running WinXP home with a wireless modem. And And IE6. Try this and let me know....
try this.
1. load up msn.com
2. under view change your encoding to western (windows)
3. minimize page then go to internet properties and delete all cookies and delete files including all offline content.
4. go to settings and set your offline content to 1mb. exit out.
5. close IE and start back up.
This is what worked for me..

hi... i actually started all this last summer, and to report: i have still not found a fix.

i have switched the users to Mozilla Firefox (as of late), and again (*as with Opera*) there is no problem with the red x's...

keep trying!!

Hi all,

I have put up with the (seemingly random) curse of the little red crosses for a while - attempting various 'fixes'(all to no avail), but not too concerned because it had never seriously inconvenienced me.

Now I am in the process of learning Dreamweaver ..... and there they are again! When I F12 to check my work in IE the images are all replaced by the dreaded red crosses. I have tried various image formats - jpeg, bmp, gif - all the same.

Since finding this excellent site I have: updated everything suggested; checked and unchecked the various permutations; altered, turned off and modified all my protections; reinstalled, uninstalled, clean installed; sworn at, threatened and even begged the little people of the h/d (well, you never know!) ..... nada, zilch, no change.

My next step (if I manage to refrain from throwing the 'puter out of the window) will be to format C:, do yet another clean install of my Win 98SE, ISP and browser and then (if the red crosses are absent) check after every new program that I add.

Assuming that I still have: a PC, my sanity, the will to live etc., after this exercise, I will post any results here

that's going to take some time... but if you're game for it, i'd suggest making an image after every install. that way, you not only know which one screwed the pooch, but also, you have a pristine copy of the OS to reload in a hurry if they re-appear on their own later...

Okay everybody. I have had this problem for MONTHS. It finally got fixed today! I have Windows 98 and was using SBC Yahoo DSL and only got the dreaded red x's. I finally was able to speak to a support person who knew the problem. They simply switched my IE back to version 5.5 and now all is fixed. She mentioned this is a big problem for those with Windows 98 on SBC Yahoo DSL and they only suggest IE 5.5 with this combination. I hope that helps someone.

Well, after "installing" it I can't seem to get IE 6 deleted to get IE 5.5 to take its place.

That's ok, I've had my own idea as to how to fix this for a while now and am going to reformat as soon as I get done typing this post. I will report back here tonight or later on tomorrow to reveal details. HOPEFULLY my idea will work and I will finally have found a fix after being plauged with this problem for nearly an entire year.

Well, I was just wasting my time with that! My bright idea was to extract my registry periodically and to use the last batch of it before the problem arose. It didn't work at all, but I must admit that I'm not as savvy as most people on problems like this, so it was just a shot in the dark, really.

I did find again, however, that directly after install, YET before my next restart, pictures load fine on all sites. After my next restart though, it's back to "normal". I typed "msconfig" in the run window and went to "startup" and did notice that after my restart "Yahoo! Pager" has been added. In fact now that I check again, it's added twice. *shrugs*. I think maybe it's the culprit.

I have had the same problem now for some time too, long nights trying to figure it out why a great deal of pages would load without gifs, until I finally found it. I have Kazaa Lite installed on my windows XP Pro, Kazaa Lite makes a file called "HOSTS" and it puts it in C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. It lists loads and loads of pages that it blocks. Here is part of the file on my machine:

The only thing I did was delete from these 2 files the pages that I wanted and they loaded correctly with all gifs included. I dont know if anyone has tried this, I certainly have tried everthing else, until I tried this.
