IE6 not displaying graphics on certain pages only 6

i service a small business with 6 machines (all running w2k).

two of these machines have the exact same problem: certain pages do not load the graphics. it is an intermittent problem. for instance, home.yahoo.com and belarc.com both do not display the graphics. if you F5 (refresh) it still will not show the graphics. HOWEVER, if you change the encoding to Western European (ISO) or Western European (Windows) it WILL display the graphics. subsequent refreshes (after you've change the encoding) will again NOT show the graphics. a quick check of the encoding reveals that it is still encoding at Wester European (ISO or Window) which ever you chose. in other words, the encoding selection has not changed, but you are now unable to view the graphics.

other pages that are viewed with the same machines load just fine. for example msn.com shows all the graphics (and there are quite a few)...

so... the problem is intermittent in the fact that not all pages load graphics. however, the problem is consistent in the fact that pages that don't load graphics NEVER load graphics (unless you change the encoding).


these are the fixes i've tried with no success (cold booting in between):
1) selecting 'auto-select' in the encoding menu.
2) clearing the temporary internet files cache.
3) reinstalling ie6 over the current installation.
4) editing the registry value (per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 283807) to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage set as default to C_28591.NLS

the KB article (283807) seems to deal with persistent non-display of graphics (for ALL web pages), but i thought i'd give it a try anyway.

i'd rather not wipe the machine just for this, but if that's the solution....

any help would be much appreciated...

I finally resoved the problem by running a service pack overtop of IE. I have ran the SP before, so somehow the settings and scripts are being messed with> I am monitoring the service pack and files changes it made now since it did restore my gifs and graphics to me.
BTW, I have also done all the other tasks and attempted all the other fixes recommended by MS and all of you fine IS specialists to no avail. The SP I used was simply the one the system pointed to when I arrived at the IE page @ microsoft.com and plugging IE service Pack in the product line. I did the same thing on other machines that were afflicted and they have all been restored to normalcy now also.
I would highly recommend going into details and noting the files that are affected so that you may also moitor your system for changes to these files that may cause a reoccurrence of the ailment.

how did you restore the individual files? did the IE6 SP do it automatically?

Having followed this string for some time and implemented the most likely-looking solutions, with only partial success, I'm going to use Netscape as my default browser and Opera when I need speediness. I'm fed-up with Microsoft's suck-it-and-see methods, they invariably mess up my systems and make us do the work they should have done themselves. Service Pack = Oops!

I may be defeatist but I've got better things to do than other people's jobs.

Seems as though there are multiple solutions to this problem. What worked for me was using TCP Optimizer as described by user letrahis on September 16th.

One of my machines had a red-x graphics problem with Internet Explorer 6 - particularly bad on performing a page refresh, and related to the Norton Firewall being enabled. The registry value for MaxConnectionsPerServer was too high for Norton to cope with. I believe this is the default value:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 2

I found the red-x problems started at values above 8.

For good measure you can set MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server to be the same value.

This problem has bugging me for ages as my ad banners on my site keep appearing as Image Not Found and the red cross. However I have just managed to resolve it. I have tried all of the things I found and spent hours on it but in the end found that it is Kazaa that causes the problem. When you install Kazaa lite it modifies the file c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. It creates many entries that are designed to stop images being loaded from certain sites that are related to advertising but it goes a little over the top to say the least.

You should only require in this file ...

127.0.0.1 localhost

However Kazaa Diet and Lite can install many other sections and lines designed to bloack images from certain well known sites. Get rid of all these extra lines and leave just the local host entry and then try your pages again and the images should then appear!

P.S. Just uninstalling Kazaa doesn't work either as it leaves the HOSTS file in this daft state!

As I have been searching the web for an answer as well, trying some suggestions aboven I combined 2 to make it easy for me and IT WORKED!! Thank you all!

My problems were:
Some times pages did load with pictures, some times they didn't. Links seamed dead, page refresh didn't work. Pages couldn't load at all. Lot's of red crosses. Strange thing was that on my other pc these pages worked. So..

I am a cable user, behind a software and hardware firewall , proxy disabled, virusscan on and a KLite++ user.

Using tcp/ip optimizer as suggested above somewhere and reducing the amount of MaxConnections Per Server as suggested above made the change easy. But if this isn't the case, you can try many other things as well.

As I am Dutch.. i had many troubles for example loading the next page..

(Nice about tcp/ip optimizer is that you can back up your own 'default' settings and try whatever combination without messing it up and the need to write down what you did. Retoring is easy.

From this browser window if i try to navigate to any website, i see NO imgs at all, but if i close it and open another broswer window and go to any webpage except that mysql one i can see all the imgs.

I also had several pages that would not open with IE 6, but would with other browsers. What corrected this problem was to go the the advance tab on under internet options and uncheck the box for "enable third party extensions" and everything worked fine

Same problem here--is anyone NOT using Yahoo/SBC DSL and having this problem? Oddly I'm using Yahoo/SBC but not any of their software; am using a router that connects directly via PPPoE.

I have the problem and an *not* using Yahoo/SBC. I have a cable modem, no special software from my provider. I tried your mysql link and the pictures didn't load. When I change the encoding to Western European (Windows) from Western European (ISO) it looks fine. I am not sure what to do. Am thinking of installing Netscape...

I'm not using Yahoo/SBC either and have often found certain pages with an annoying little red cross using IE but the mysql link did load the pictures for me. Anyway, I use Opera too along with IE and Opera has no problems!

I had to reformat my computer, and I had the same problem. No pics on web pages unless I manually selected the Western European (Windows) encoding on each page. I'd never had this problem before. Someone pointed me to this site, and I finally found the cause. The connection manager of Yahoo DSL!

I did notice that when I reinstalled everything this last time that the connection manager was now on my computer and it hadn't been before, but I didn't know how to get rid of it. I went down this post & tried everything mentioned until I came to spidey373's post on Oct. 2nd about disconnecting programs in msconfig. Finally traced the problem to the Yahoo connection manager. *%#@ Yahoo. I should have known. Doing this has helped solve other problems in the past. I think I'm going to start to keep a notebook with problems & solutions. Would make my life easier. :- P

By the way, this is an awsome site.... or at least this post is.

First I must say this forum is excellent. I had gone through EVERY fix listed in this thread, but nothing worked UNTIL I read Xena1's post five minute ago. Xena, when I originally had the SBC YAHOO Browser installed along with the connection manager, it appeared I had no problems. When I uninstalled everything and left the manager, apparently that must have been the trouble as I removed it from msconfig start-up and voila, it is back to normal! I didn't connect the two because I had uninstalled a few other programs on my computer and had recently fixed a browser hijacking issue. Thank you for sharing that. Sad that I was running around addressing everything but the actual problem.
