I use WinXP. I have two accounts established: Admin and a limited use account. I rarely use the Admin account (primarily to load certain new applications). My issue only pertains to an issue experienced while logged into the Admin account. I DO NOT experience this issue when logged into the limited use account.

My problem: When logged into the Admin account I CANNOT access a site by typing the URL into the address bar.

IE launches to my home page. I can click on links from the home page and go to those sites. However, when I type a URL into the address bar and click 'go' (or press the enter key) NOTHING happens. I get no system response what-so-ever. I don't even get a blank screen with an error message. Most (but not all) "favorites" shortcuts do not work. Windows Update (the shortcut on the Start menu) will not work. In the case of Windows Update (shortcut from the Start menu), IE will launch to a blank screen. Again, no error message. Just a blank screen.

I DO NOT have this problem when I'm logged into my limited use account. I can launch Windows Update from the Start menu by right clicking and selecting "run as another user" and selecting my Admin account. I can type a URL into the address bar and go to whichever site I've entered.

I update and run Ad-Aware weekly. I have update and run Spybot weekly (yep... I'm a 'belt and suspenders kind of guy...). I run a complete Avast anti-virus software weekly (Avast auto-updates quite often). While Ad-Aware and/or Spybot always identify cookies and such, most items identified look like the results of normal surfing activities. I've never (knock on wood) had a virus identified by Avast.

I'm stumped. I will appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions.

As Administrator, open a notepad session and copy/paste the below as IE_fix.cmd:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file and double-click, answer all the prompts.

Thanks for the suggestion, bcastner. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to help.

I launched the file. All completed successfully except the following:

"Load Library ("MSJAVA.dll") Failed - The Specified Module Could Not be Found."

I launched the file a couple of times to be sure. No change in the behavior of IE as described in my original note.

A quick scan of the Windows Support site shows they no longer offer the virtual machine (and, if I remember correctly this has something to do with their legal issues with Java). Updates are only available if VM is already installed.

I searched my hard drive for the .dll without success. I searched the WinXP installation disk for the .dll without success.

Any other ideas?

I do appreciate your prior suggestion....

Thanks for the second tip, 'B'. However, it doesn't appear to have resolved my issue. I downloaded the fix app, ran the fix app, and tested IE. No difference. I then re-booted and tested IE again. Still not able to go anywhere by entering a URL in the address bar.

I'm going to nominate you for a reward anyway if for no other reason than your willingness to suggest things. That really is appreciated.

Thank you.

Lets test for possible profile corruption. Create a new Administrator user. Logon as the new user. Still the same issue?

If not, copy the older profile, begin carefull not to copy the files mentioned in this MS KB:

I created a new Admin account. Same problem as before. While IE will launch to my home page, I cannot enter a URL into the address bar and go to that site.

As always, appreciate your continued suggestions, 'B'.

Copy the entire installation to your hard disk drive under a new folder, and install from there.

I'm not sure I understand your suggestion. 'Copy the entire installation...'. What is it you're suggesting I copy?

Sorry to be dense.

FINALLY, I've resolved this puppy....

Here's what I did....

1. Reinstalled IE.INF
2. Deselected 'Enable Third Party Browser Extensions'

I'm now a very happy camper.

Many thanks to 'bcastner' who, even though he wasn't the one who came through with a solution, certainly tried harder than anyone else to come up with ideas.
