Hi there,

I read an article about adware trojans that lay dormant in your computer and i think i have one, can anyone help?

when i go online with IE, i get these pop adverts that appear amd say 'whatever product' - GAIN/gator in the window bar.

Does anyone know if GAIN/gator is some kind of adware program that is in my computer somewhere and that kicks in with adverts everytime i go on line? Does anyonelse get this happening?

Apprieciate any help!!

Make that anti "spyware". (Though anti-soyware sounds interesting). "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Nobrain,

I downloaded adware and I still get those adds. When I logged on this is what I got in the background it's a surveillance camera to buy. How do I get rid of those????

Apprieciate any ideas good or bad?

That's a new annoying ad trick called "pop unders". They appear when you close your browser. I just close them out. There is probably a utility that stops them, but as far as I know they do no harm. They are just another advertising scheme. Did you open and run Ad-Aware? You realize it is a program you have to execute. It doesn't run in the background. I just ran adware and it came up with 3 suspicious registry keys and 7 cookies. Now what do I do delete them? I have never used adware before any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanx,

Click on continue and check each one that is listed (you can configure it to automatically check them for removal) and click on remove. It will remove all the listed items from your system. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

What would you suggest would you have it automaticly remove it? I just removed them all then I re-scanned it and it ran clean.
Thanx,
Cindy

I configure mine to automatically mark them for removal, but I like to remove them myself so I can see what is being removed. It's a matter of preference.... "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Nobrain,
Thank you very much. I have to admit I was a little nervous to take advise from someone called nobrain but you've been very helpful. Goes to show can't judge a book by it's cover! ha ha ha
I think this forum is a great idea. I have been to forums before and you get your answer in 2 weeks. Here you can get same day service. Well time to go to bed.
Night peoples.

You are most welcome. Sometimes I live up to my
"handle", but I hope not too often. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Don't forget to download the Ad-Aware Update Utility 2.01.
It is for updating the latest reference file just like an anti-virus program updates it's dat files. After you download it and install it, it will be located in Explorer at C:\Program Files\Lavasoft Refupdate. Double click the Refupdate 2.0.exe to start the program. You need to be on line and click on "Connect". This will search for and install the latest ref update. You can right click this .exe file and send it to the desktop as a shortcut and you won't have to look it up every time. You should run this often to keep Ad-Aware updated. I a on the internet like "a few" hours a day and get TONS of spyware and trojans and stuff...(mostly because of downloading)

but i have 2 firewalls norton antivirus (updated every day)
and ad-aware and i still get them...it's a little funny.

after a day of "surfing" i have like 5 spyware and get 1 trojan/week ;P

how do they do that?

Heya, go to download.com and search for a pop-up killer. It will get rid of those pop-unders. Also, if it doesn't get rid of one, you can add it to the list. Very useful and usually does the trick, but watch out. Sometimes they'll misread the title and close a window that you want/need. Not very often, but the sites I go to they do it periodically. I go to not so average sites.

Hope this helps some.

And to HiyaTiya, use Blackice Firewall and Antivirus.com, Ad-ware, and a Pop-up Killer. That'll halt most activities.

blackice firewall...whats so special about it? and what is antivirus.com?

Blackice Firewall is a really decent firewall. Along with blocking most unused and unnecessary ports you can block or allow access to any port you care to. Also, if you do have an entrance it'll show who, IP, MAC number and more so you can trace more than they do. If a port is entered into and you have no clue why that port is open or what it's used for, blackice will give you what its used for.

Antivirus.com allows you to scan your computer from the Web, their site, and use their most up-to-date DEF files for virus recognition. Mind you, it will not catch viruses before they compile and run to the next T-Cell, but it will catch the ones that are already running havoc.
