When I go to particular sites in IE 6.0/winxp, IE just closes with no warning and no error message. I've tried reinstalling it many time. Nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, is there no entry at all for when IE closes?

Any commonality to the sites?
Examples?

I have also experienced the same issue however running IE 6.0/W2K. I no errors in evt log or any kind of Dr. Watson error.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

A malware investigation is in order. See the steps in faq608-4650

what do I do when I go to that link? also, what's a malware investigation?

thanks!

I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and even got the latest Stinger from NAI and I still have the problem. (i did however find W32/Pate.B virus)

Anyway malware found the usual Alexa entries but nothing else. I've reinstalled IE6 and OE6 w/ SP1 to no avail. I'm afraid my next step is to reinstall the OS!

Any last thoughts before I begin?

Thanks for the help!

I have the same problem, but it's only when I type antivirus in my browser. I can manage to get to an antivirus site, but only if I leave out the s at the end. I was running Panda Internet Security (Platinum), which I stupidly signed up for 3 years only 2 weeks ago, and it did not stop it throught the firewall. If indeed it is a virus. When I look in Windows explorer and I try to look at the Panda directory, it shuts down my browser. When I try to install NAV, it shuts down the install. When I try to run from a boot, it finds nothing. I am stuffed. I have sent Panda numerous e-mails, no reply. Thanks Panda. Any ideas anyone, except for re-installing XP?

Try accessing online av sites through smah's links: faq760-3862

Also, try the access in Safe Mode.

I had the same problem last year, IE opened home page but when I tried to goto another it closed down. I tried all the usual CWshredder, hijack this, spybot S&D and antivirus. Also tried reinstalling IE6 as per MS website and running a reg repair but none fixed. In the end I had to back up all my files and reinstall the OS and it now works fine. The only thing I found was that it occurred after installing nortan AV (pile of c**p) but uninstalling did not fix. PC was dell laptop with XP home.
