Hi everyone,
I'm delighted to find such a great site.
I have been 'lurking' for a little while and love the compact and exact nature of both question and reply.
I recently downloaded Jave from Sun Microsystems at the reccomendation of a particular site which said the chat applet could not work properly and maybe I had an incorrect or outdateed version of Jave.
I did so but the applet didn't open after that so I disabled it from the task bar.
It might be a coincidence but since then I am unable to open in a new window...either by my right click selection to do so, or on sites which automatically open in a new window.
It seems as if the address is not being passed on and I read a message that reccomended running a group of dll's to see what happened.
On one of them I recieved the following message...
"Shell 32 dll was loaded but the dll register server entry point was not found.
DLL register server may not be exported or a corrupt version of shell 32 dll; may be in memory. Consider using Pview to detect and remove it."
This is all too much for me and I considered deleting IE6 and re-installing it but thought that it might be possible that there is a simple solution to someone with the appropriate knowledge of IE6 so here I am.
I would be very grateful for any advice or help with this as, naturally, you can imagine how many sites are now..'unavailable'.
Thanks to all

Don't try and remove IE 6.0. Can cause very bad things...
If you feel it necessary, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and if you have it available, highlight IE and initiate uninstall. You will be presented with options, one of which is to Repair IE. Do this.
If this isn't available/doesn't pan out (I've no idea what OS you're running...), go to Start, Run, type in msinfo32. When the Microsoft System Information screen pops up, select Tools, then Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
Post back if no joy...

Actually, we should probably locate the correct version of shell32 for your OS and paste it in and register it.
First off, try going to Start, Run, type in regsrvr32.exe shell32.dll[//b]. Click Run and wait for confirmation. See if this rectifies the problem, if not, post back with your OS and we'll see if we can find the right .dll for you...

I have Win2000 spe

No IE repair tool,
No regsrvr32.exe shell32.dll[//b].

thanks!

The [//b] is a mark-up language screw-up on my part. It should read regsrvr32.exe shell32.dll....none of the other crap. This is a command to register a dll, not something you're going to find on your pc....
Are you having the same problem as rockclocks or, or what???
Here's info on the repair tool:

In answer to the questions, please excuse my lack of completeness in my question.
My OS is windows 98 second edition
In answer to the second suggestion from CARRR assuming he meant to enter it as one complete line as thus....regsrvr32.exe shell32.dll......the answer from the confuser was as follows..."Cannot find the file regsrvr32.exe or one of it's components..."
By the way, as per the first suggestion, I did a repair on Internet Explorer as per instructions but on the restart nothing had changed re: my continued inability to open new windows.
Thanks to all and I will await further suggestions now that you have the information I should have given the first time...DUHHH!

Arrrrgggghhhh!!!! [curse] Blast my typos....
That should have read, once and for all -- I will not make type this time -- regsvr32.exe shell32.dll---without the extra 'r' I threw in there. This should work...a thousand pardons for my keyboard inconsistencies. Post back if not, we'll move on to the next idea...

To CARR,
I did as you suggested and ran regsvr32.exe shell32.dll as you indicated and recieved the following message...." Shell32 dll was loaded but the dll register server entry point was not found.
Dll register server may not be exported or a corrupt version of shell32.dll may be in memory. Consider using Pvier to detect and remove it."
I hope this means something to me...because it is Greek to me....and I only know English and French.
I will await....most anxiously, your comments on this newest development.
Thanks again.

rockclocks,

I've steered you down the wrong road. Disregard the regsvr32 shell32.dll....it will not work, it's not meant to work. However, using the same method, try regstering the following (one at a time):

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Also, for more inspiration, check this thread out:

Nevermind...if I could read, I'd see that you'd already done this.
Back to your original problem. When you say you can't open a new window, are you even getting a new window at all, or a new window with nothing in it?
What exactly did you disable from the task bar? Have you gone back and "undone" this bahavior. What version of Java are you running? (Go to Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Objects...is your Java ok? Damaged?)
--- I may have wasted a lot of your time by not carefully reading your situation....apologies ---

FYI....regsvr32 shell32.dll is only applicable to Windows ME, Windows 2000 and XP. I should have told you to run regsvr32 shdoc401.dll

To Carr,
Please don't excuse yourself...I was not entirely clear about either my system or my problem.
I will tell you of the results of running regsvr32 shdoc401.dll first.
I recieved the following message..."Dll register server in shdoc401.dll succeeded."
In answer to the first inquiry/request , here is the information that resulted...
00000161-0000 0.. unknown 32 k
31564d57 0000.. unknown 32 k
java runtime envi installed (total size) none
java runtime envi installed (again under the column total size.. none)

update class installed 160 kb
yahoo audio conf installed 288 kb
yahoo chat installed 320 kb
yahoo chat 1.3 installed 256 kb
As near as I can remember I installed Java from the Sun site (long download at 28,800) but when it seemed to be doing nothing to help my efforts on Yahoo chat (where I only wanted to find out how to get into Page Builder rather than Page Wizard to edit a site I have made and maintained for about a year)...still haven't been able to...I then, if I remember correctly, disabled it from my task bar at the bottom right of my screen.
The rest is history.
Hope this helps you help me.

Ok. Just for good measure - make sure we're running from a clean slate -- download SpyBot and run it on your pc. Remove any spyware/malware that it might turn up. I don't think this the source of your problem, but stranger things have happened (Get it here>> ).

Dear Carr,
I have installed and regularly run AdAware 6.0....so far it has managed to catch quite a number of 'Software trash'. I have had no problems in the past which might make me think it was the problem and if fact have been running the new version since it came out.
As I said, the problem seems to have occured very near the time I downloaded Sun's Java or when I 'disabled' it.
I neglected to answer ALL your questions on the previous posting so let me here.
The window 'opens' bur says mearly "Microsoft Internet Explorer"....nothing more and no matter how long I leave it, it does not go to any url. Similarly, if I left click on something within a site and the site itself redirects me via a new window, that too does not work. I know that must be obvious but one never knows.
I don't know if this is relevant or not but while on MANY sites I will notice areas on the site...perhaps pictures...that will not display at all but offer only a square box with a colored 'icon' in the top left corner..which, in the past occured very infrequently and I could then right click and select 'show picture'...which it then did.
Once again, thanks for all your hard detective work and I will await your advice.

It sounds...sounds...like you just need to get the java squared away. Go back to Tool > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects and select both Java entries and remove them. Now go to and download and install Java VM. Post back with any results....

Also, after the fresh Java install, go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level. Scroll down to Microsoft VM, Java permission, make sure it's not disabled (I use Low). Ok. Now go to the Advanced tab. Go to Microsoft VM, make sure everything's enabled. Ok. Restart.

Dear Carr,
I tried to do as you suggested and go to Tool > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects and select both Java entries and remove them but I encountered a problem.
I recieved this message when I tried to remove them..."there is not enough information avaiolable to completly remove Java runtime..........
Please check add/remove control panel for more removal options.
This I then did and recieved the following message for one of the 2 javas there (one removed no problem) but the other prompted the following message....unhandled exception...se v 1.4.1-02
error number 0x80070725
description: Incopatable version of the rcp stub"
Then, hoping I had removed most or all of the offending Java, I downloaded a fresh version and tried to reinstall it but recieved essestially the same message when I ran the install program....
"Error number 0x80070725
description: Incopatable version of the rcp stub
setup will now terminate"
So it now doesn't want to load the new Java I have either.....................HELP!!!
;-)..Sorry...couldn't resist a bit of panic there.
Will await your newest evaluation.
Thanks again.

Dear Carr,
As an addendum to my last posting here is ...perhaps...another hint. I just tried to load a program called Quicken and when the setup was nearly complete I recieved EXACTLY the same message as above in a box entitled Unhandled Exception...the message being.."error number 0x80070725
description: Incopatable version of the rcp stub"
What the heck is going on???
Thanks...hope this helps

Now we're getting somewhere.
Paste this url into your address bar and download this tool (msrepair):

Run it and restart your pc. This may well take care of all of your problems. The "Incompatible...rcp stub" error refers to a file that's out of sync with your OS...this happened during the install of Java, no doubt.
Let me know how this works for you...

Dear Carr,
YOU DID IT!!!!!
YES......I'M YELLING!!!
However you managed to figure it out from the confused and convoluted collection of clues I provided i wish I knew but nonetheless there it is....the solution.
You are a genuis.
Thank you so very much....now, after nearly 2 weeks of very limited browsing I will, once again be able to enjoy the full capabilities of my confuser.
I will go right now and find the place where I can reccommend you as a top adviser.
Have yourself a wonderful day...I know I will.
Thanks again from Rockclocks
