Had my IBM Deskstar die on me today - the bios just cannot boot from the drive- the machine just resets itself.I have tried erasing the boot sectors and low level formatting the drive but to no avail.

I can however boot from another device (another hard disk or floppy) and use the hard disk (copy files etc across).

Drive Fitness test detects absolutely no errors what so ever but the drive is definately not bootable.

Has anybody else encountered this problem or anything like and if so how can i sort it?

Cheers

Craig

what happens with fdisk /mbr?

You may need to look at the sector with a disk editor and see if there really is a boot sector. And consider the possibility of a mbr virus. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I used Drive Fitness Test and erased the boot sectors but after trying to install XP the machine just kept crashing as the drive was being accessed.

IBM DESKSTAR DRIVES SEEM TO BE DROPPING LIKE FLYS,
i HAD 2 61.5GB IDE DRIVES GO BAD, IN A WEEK,
GO TO IBM SITE, FOLLOW INSTRUTIONS ON WARRANTY, SOME OF THESE DRIVES HAVE 3YR WARRANTY, SOME ONLY ONE YEAR, I WAS SENT ANOTHER DRIVE BY IBM, STILL WAITING FOR THE SECOND ONE. BOTH WERE 3YR. ALSO, USING IBM'S DRIVE UTILTY, NEVER
UNCOVERED, ANY BAD SECTORS,OR MBS PROBLEMS, BUT THE DRIVE WOULD NOT BOOT, OR WOULD BOOT INTO XP, AND THEN FAIL.

I have decided to just shelve the IBM drive - I have just bought a 60Gb Maxtor drive - which I installed yesterday with no problems.

We'll just have to see

Thanks
