I have a problem that I hope that somebody can help me with. I have a Compaq Evo 150 running on win2k pro and up to now I was accessing the internet with a wireless LAN at the hotel I am staying at. I wanted to test a network device and had to define my PC with an IP address. I turned off my firewall (permanently) and I tried to ping the network device but nothing happened so I tried to ping it with a friends PC running on XP with success (no problem with the NetDev). Now the probelm! After I reset my settings to find an IP addres automatically now the PC sees the network sends packets but does not recieve and does not connect the internet. ipconfig shows me he ip address automatically assigned (I guess)and this pings. What could have changed. I also have tried to uninstall the TCP/IP protocol and reinstall to no avail! Well, this is second time I am experiencing this problem the first time I thought I had a general problem and reinstalled Windows. But I dont want to go through that again.

Ok thanks for the reply heres the config /all results

You can't see the DHCP server. The 169.254.227.19 address is a default that Microsoft inserts when the DHCP server does not reply.

Can't obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server

Symptoms: 1) you have a DHCP client which may not be able to obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server intermittently. 2) after setup a workstation to obtain an IP address from DHCP, the machine can't ping others and ipconfig /all shows Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.x.x.

Resolutions: 1) If this is XP, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP.
2) Use the Network Diagnostics tool to identify any failed settings. To do this, go to Help and Support>Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems>Network Diagnostics>Scan your system. When the process finishes, check for any items marked "FAILED" in red, expand those categories, and view the additional details about what the testing showed.
3) Assign a static ip on the client and ping the DHCP server. If you can't ping the DHCP server, check the connection and hardware.
4) If you can ping the DHCP after assigning static ip, check the DHCP settings.
5) Make sure no firewall is running on your LAN.
6) Run Repair this connection if it is XP. Or use netsh to reset TCP/IP configuration.
7) If it is win98/w2k, remove and reinstall TCP/IP.
8) Try to upgrade the new NIC driver.

You original problem describes a firewall problem. I suspect in trying to repair it other issues have since come to play a more important role.

What I would do:

1. Many firewalls become worse if disabled. Many are very difficult to remove. Zone Alarm is the worst. Older McAfee a close second.

It might be better to re-enable the firewall and then go immediately to the website for the firewall maker and download and apply any updates. I admit you may have to use a floppy disk to do this.

While on the website, look to see how to open the firewall to permit traffic when you are at remote sites.

2. Be careful of "hidden" firewalls. PC-Illan antivirus is not at the top of my list for creating the problem you describe. It installs a default firewall that will kill DHCP traffic and Netbios LAN communications. You can disable it through the program without the issues discussed in #1 above.

3. Depending on how much fiddling you did, it might be worthwhile to clean your Winsock service stacks and reset your TCP/IP parameters. This winsock tool will do any repairs needed on Windows95 -- Windows XP systems quite handily:

"PC-Illan antivirus is not at the top of my list for creating the problem you describe. "

A typo obscures my point. Subsitute now for not.

This program has created a lot of problems.

Another help would be this when I try to ping Anything including a network device with a known IP addres I get error number 65. Whats worse is that this is a laptop and I dont have a floppy disk and the only way to get software to this PC was through the internet or my LAN.

On win2000 how would I clean my winsock service stacks manually ?

nw2000,

Just use the utility I linked above. It will do an excellent job and will allow you to save your registry settings.

To do it manually:

. Remove the TCP/IP protocol from all adapters
. Use regedit to remove Winsock key entirely
. Use regedit to remove Winsock2 key entirely
. Add/Remove Programs, remove Network components using the Windows Components Add/Remove applet

reboot.

. Use Add/Remove to restore Windows Networking components
. re-enable TCP/IP on all adapters.
. re-enable all network services and protocols on each adapter.

reboot.

Or use the utility linked above.

You should look into the use of Direct Cable Connection, you surely have at least a CD drive so you could write to a CD and transfer that way, or you could use Third-Party tools like laplink.

Thanks for the great tips and as soon as I fix the problem I'll post the results of which was the best for my particular problem

Well I am finally online HOW? after tinkering with winfix manual deleting winsock to no avail I removed Zone alarm removed all protocols, client for MS sharing ans file sharing, uninstalled my Ethernet card and finally deleted in the reg everything that related to Winsock (in a mad agresseive way) after I rebooted install my net card and its components and bingo its working again.
Thanks guys for all info without which i wouldnt have known where to look in the first place

bcastner is there any other firewall you can suggest that dosent cause these types of problems?

Ok so mine isn't the same problem, well error 65s is, however.

I have run the winsockfix on my W2K SP 4 syustem and I still cant ping my other LAN connected systems.

I'll try reboot the Win98 desktop and laptop but .....

My sequence of events were :-

1) Blaster worm
2) Install ZoneAlarm
3) Install PopUpStopper
4) Install Norton Security (Stopped ZA from starting)
5) Install ActuiveSync for my HP2210 PocketPC
At this point I still has Internet connectivity
6) Install Win2K Service pack 4
Hey presto no internet and no LAN.....

Any thoughts ?

That is HELP !

I've perused the Microsoft website for "known problems" with SP 4 but I can't make head or tail of it.

I already wrote this but here goes again, I solved this prob by
1. uninstalling all components in my LAN properties
2. deleting all references found relating to winsock in the reg
3. reboot
4. reinstalling network components

sounds a bit harse but I had tried everything else above and im still online. I am running Win2K with SP4 also.
