https and php

I think I am confused...OK I know I am confused. I have been reading the posts on https and they mostly relate to connecting to another server (i.e., cc processing company). I need to make a secure login on my own server. Everything will run off of one server. Do I need some special script to make this happen or can I just point to

https://www.site.com/login.php

and expect that it will be a secure transaction of data. I will make sure its port 443, but other than that what else do I need to do?

HTTP and HTTPS are not handled by PHP. These protocols are handled by your web server.

I guess I was not clear, sorry. Assuming I have an https enabled server, can I just point to https.../login.php and expect the data transmission to be secure?

Also, assuming I need to write a script to make the transaction secure, what might be some php oriented suggestions?

Yes. Provided that the script in question is in a directory for which your web server has been configured to make encryption available.

Again, HTTPS (and for that matter HTTP) are handled in their entirety by the web server.
