Hi,

Out IBM tape drive started failing, so we got a HP Surestore DAT24EU. We configured the switches as per HP's
documentation, shut down the rs6000, connected the tape drive and started the rs6000 and we cannot write to the drive. We get "Device not ready". The SCSI ID is the same as the last drive.

Any ideas?

Tony

Hi Tony

As per your mail what I understood was ...You got only one error "DEVICE NOT READY"

with root login: u can verify whether or not tape device available.
#lsdev -Cc tape

If any software to be installed to support HP drives...
please use cfgmgr command with i option....
Please give the out put of your command...so that I can diagnoze properly...

Hi Sushveer,

Thanks for your response.

We get
rmt0 Defined 00-00-0S-3,0 Other SCSI Tape Drive
from the lsdev -Cc tape command.

As far as I'm aware, the new tape drive is supposed
to be identical to the old one - all we did was set some
switches on the drive according to AIX instructions
on HP's website. There was no mention of any drivers
being required.

Regards,

Tony

Did you delete the old one with a rmdev command before you put the new one in?

Since we were replacing the tape drive with one of
the same model, we did not think it neccessary to
use rmdev. Is that neccessary in the case of replacing
a tape drive with one that is the same model?

the fact that lsdev does not know the type of drive (it says Other) means that either some drivers are missing, some ODM info is missing, or you need to rmdev it (rmdev -dl rmt0) and reconfigure (cfgmgr). also the "Defined" state is not good, should be "Available". that means AIX does not see your device, although it has a definition for it in the ODM, which is of course the definition for your old drive.

you should always rmdev devices you remove and configure new ones, helps prevent confusion. after that, we will see if the output matches previous config info.

Hello,
I have the similar problem, when i'm put the same tape on aix they show "other scsi tape device" when i'm try make #tar -cvf /dev/rmt0 /.
tar: /dev/rmt0: The input or output media is write-protected.

The media are not write-protected and the drive works fine on windows.
# lsdev -Cc tape
rmt0 Available 10-68-00-5,0 Other SCSI Tape Drive

Any ideas?

mcguinne, as your lsdev lists the tape drive as "defined" it will not be operational.

try

rmdev -dl rmt0
cfgmgr
lsdev -Cctape

and see if you get a tape drive as "available"

Then try your command again. Even as an "other scsi tape drive" tar/backup/whatever should work.
