Hi all,

A local comuter hard drive failed, remove the old hard drive, install a new hard drive and OS (windows xp pro) with only one partition( C: ). Named the same computer name as before and add BE remote agent. Selected new back up folders in drive C:

Next day, back up failed. BE still try to back up drive D: from old hard drive even though it does not exist.

Question:
- Shouldn't BE automatically detect the new hard drive partition or is there a way I can manually "Tell" BE that the new computer does not have drive D:? I checked the back up job selection and it only shows drive C:

In the job's selection list you can switch to text view and specifically exclude a drive/folder/file.

Personally I would recreate the job. I hate having a bunch of exceptions hanging around for me to forget about.

I agree with you, but I am still new at this job and don't know what i should back up if i recreate the backup job. Is there any guideline on what I do and don't need to back up?

Look at the selection list of the current job, that will tell you what the previous backup operator thought was good enough. You'll have to use your own judgement from there on.

And remember, the proof of a good backup is the ability to restore it. I've seen admins think things are good because a job backed up successfully only to find out that the set wouldn't restore for one reason or another.

You can also edit the selection order to put that resource
at the top of the list.. that way when your in text view
you can delete out the top most items instead of
having to go way down the list each time if it wasn't
first in line to get backed up.

Best way to get a decent backup would be to get most
everything except temp folders, temporary internet folders
and things like the pagefile or hibernate file if its a
workstation. You'd definatly want the system state if it'll
work properly. Since there isn't many easy ways to setup a
automated backup of the registry.

Personally i do full backups each night but i have alot of
files i don't select since i've done this for so long. Also
have an updated ghost image of a server makes recovery time
about 20 minutes if the system completly failed for me.

Problem with that is some companies don't have room or
resources for a completly seperate backup server, so you
can't reboot it when ever or make changes without worrying
about if its going to affect production. Fun stuff!! :)
