What is the usual negotiation for a new medical software trainer? I have been offered a base of 48K but they want me to first start at 42K until I know the software. Is this how it usually goes? I never heard of being offered one base but starting at another.

I have 30 years of professional business experience. 5 years of training experience; 5 years of medical business and the rest in communications. Ihave a masters degree in communications.

How should I negotiate this? Salary.com states the salary usually is between 47-50K.

I am going back for a 2nd interview to close the deal.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Is this your first time being a medical software trainer?

I would try for 45K to start for training and say in 4 -6 months request the evaluation of the 48K. To me that seems like a huge jump between 42 and 48...I almost get the idea they may wind up paying you 45k in the end, instead of the 48k (using "well you still don't fully know the software").

See if you can't get them to get the offer in writing, and maybe do a pay increase over time. (42k to start, 44k after 3 months of training, 46k after 6 mos, 48k after a year or whatever their timeline is for training).
