I implmented two routers as follows, but they are very slow.

192.168.3.0-Cisco1601R <static route> Cisco2501-192.168.0.0

Two segments
192.168.3.0 (A)
192.168.0.0 (B)

When I move a file from segment A to segment B that
it was very slow.

How can I improve speed of my two routers?
I have been set clock rate 56000 and bandwidth 56.

If the routers are connected via a serial back to back cable then you can increase the clock rate, the interfaces will certainly work up to 2 Meg. To see what speed options you have enter CLOCK RATE ?

The bandwidth command has no affect on the throughput.

Also, what protocol are you using for the transfer, FTP should be much quicker than TFTP for instance.

Thank you routerman

if the serial interface only support 2MB.
How does it support T2 or above?

What unit does clock rate calculate? Kb ?

Thanks

Victorjob,
To support serial connections over WAN links greater than 2Mb, you'll need a HSSI card (High Speed Serial Interface). HSSI supports up to 52Mb.

You don't usually have to specify a clockrate when connecting to your service providers NTU. The clocking is usually done by the NTU device.

When talking networks speeds we use "b" (ie..Kilo bits/Megabits) not "B" (ie.. KiloBytes/MegaBytes). The difference between bits and Bytes is a multiple of 8. I think there is a lot of confusion between the two amongst networking engineers.

I have had that debate more than once. HUGE difference between bits and Bytes. I had to use the anology of a Carton of cigs vs. a pack of cigs. "Ok Thog, now which one is Byte and which one is a bit? The pack is a ___, and the carton is a ____ ? Get it right and you can take your smoke break!!"

Not the greatest analogy but my thought was use what they know, get em to learn.

If I used the DB60 cable to connect back to back router. does this DTE and DCE DB60 only support 2Mb? so slow...

Thanks

The speed depends on the hardware, in the example below which is a WIC-1T in a 2600 the clock rate command shows speed up to 8000000, but errors if you try to use it. My router can run at 4Mbps.

Also output from show controller indicates which one has the DCE cable connected.

show control s0/0

Interface Serial0/0
Hardware is PowerQUICC MPC860
DCE V.11 (X.21), no clock

R2#conf t
R2(config)#int s0/0
R2(config-if)#clock rate ?
Speed (bits per second)
1200
2400
4800
9600
14400

1300000
2000000
4000000
8000000

<300-4000000> Choose clockrate from list above
R2(config-if)#clock rate 2000000
R2(config-if)#clock rate 4000000
R2(config-if)#clock rate 8000000

I'm not sure if you can use a HSSI interface in the same way ie with a back to back cable, depends if the interface is capable of generating a clock.

Thank you very much!
What command can I test the speed in cisco router?
I refered to my book that serial could support greater speed at 115,200Kbps.

All the serial ports on these routers run at (maximum) 2.048Mbps sync and 115.2Kbps async. This includes the WIC-1T that will fit in the slot on the 1601R.
Therefore the max clock rate to use is 2000000
