How Can I Discontine a Line Chart Series? 3

Using CR 8.0 and VB6 I have a Line Chart that shows
monthly projected expenditures, current funds
availability, and current expenditures. What I need
to do is stop the lines of the Current Expenditures and
Current Funding at the current date and then continue
the projected line out two months.

I can do this in Excel by inserting a NULL in the
monthly values past the current period for the
expenditures and funds (which is the method in use)
and the line stops. But when I try to do it in Crystal
the and the line shoot to zero. I've tried unselecting
the Report Options; Convert NULL Field value to Default
but the line still is converted to 0.

Any Ideas ?

Mark

There is no way to insert a null in Crystal. All numeric forumlas and totals will result in 0, not null.

The only way to introduce a null into a report is to read the null value from the database. Even then, I am not sure the chart would behave as you want. You could try doing two separate charts and underlaying them.

I'll give the two chart option a try. I've tried returning NULL from the database and Crystal still zeros it out.

Thanks,

I have the same problem that you are having.
What does it mean to underlay a chart?

Split the section into A and B, one for each chart, and then mark one section to underlay the other (in Format-Section). Ken Hamady

Sorry, I'm still confused.
I split the section into A and B.
I copied my chart from the top section to the bottom section (and changed the parameters slightly to have different values display on each chart).
Then I checked the underlay section for A.

When I do a preview, the only thing I see is the chart in section B. (Section A chart is hidden.)
I also noticed that the scales are different. (I have auto-range selected on both line charts).

Sorry, I was wrong. The underlay won't help with charts, because the backround of the chart is opaque, not transparent. Not sure I have a solution for you. Ken Hamady

Thanks for your help.
Actually, I found a work-around witch was to insert a row in my table (oracle) for each point on the chart (skipping those rows that were null). The chart I created has 2 "on change of" fields and a formula field for the "Show value".

However, this produced a new error with the legend that I cannot correct.
See thread149-61867 "Chart Legend" to see the new problem.

Another user in another thread reminded me how to make the backround of a chart not be opaquq. Load the chart in the analyzer, select the background, right click and select "Format Chart - Selected Item". There is a "Transparent" option.
