We recently changed from WordPerfect to MSWord 2002. I wasn't thrilled by that but I figured that at least I would already know all the basic navigation key strokes. Instead I feel like I'm in an old version of the Mac OS.

So, why doesn't "home" do anything? Why can't I get to the top of the document by hitting ctrl+home? Ok, you don't have to answer those questions. Just tell me, can you tell me a way to get to the top of the document in one key stroke combination?

Thanks. It's a great reference. It says:

Start of Document CTRL+HOME
Start of Line HOME

So, my installation must be busted somehow because when I hit CTRL+HOME, I get the Find/Replace/Go To box. And when I hit HOME, the computer just sits there staring at me.

Are you running a Windows machine and I read your Mac comment as appropriately sarcastic, or are you truly running a Mac?

Regardless, it should be an easy fix...relatively.

Go to Tools > Customize > select the Keyboard button. Under categories, choose "All Commands," then under Commands, find and highlight StartOfDocument. Verify in the "Current keys:" box that the appropriate combination is specified and save it to your normal.dot file.

Likely, something, somewhere has fallen out of whack.

Yes, I use a Dell w/ XP at the office, which is where I am having the problem. (At home, I have a Mac w/ OS X, which finally, grudgingly incorporates some features like ALT+TAB and runs on top of a real operating system.)

In Tools Options under the General Tab there is a tick box, "help for WordPerfect users" There are other things in other tabs there referring to Word Perfect, some of which you may find useful

Thanks Carrr. Good to know. Didn't work though. It already said the right things. Re-entering didn't help. Clicking Reset All didn't either.

Thanks Tiglet. Actually, I knew about that. In this case, though, I'm trying to get Word to do standard MS commands.

Ok.
Try the suggestion I posted above, then make sure that "Sticky Keys" hasn't accidentally been enabled (Control Panel > Accessibility Options > then just uncheck the 'Sticky Keys' option). It has been knownb to cause problems with keyboard shortcuts.

Nope. Sticky Keys not enabled. And CTRL+HOME works fine in other programs such as Excel.

Do me a favor and find your normal.dot file.
Rename it normal.old.
Start Word and let it recreate normal.dot.
Any change?

Nope. Same problem.

Along the same lines as what carrr posted earlier, see if Ctrl+Home is assigned to EditReplace and, if so, remove it:

Tools > Customize > Keyboard
Categories: Edit
Commands: EditReplace
Click on Ctrl+Home in Current keys: window
Click Remove
Click Close
Click Close again

As to WordPerfect vs. Word, I miss a lot of the WordPerfect features, but I also would like to incorporate a few of the Word features into WordPerfect.

If you haven't already printed the "WordPerfect Keyboard Equivalents" list in Word's Help menu:

Press F1
In the Index window, type WordPerfect
Press Enter
[The first topic should be "WordPerfect Keyboard Equivalents".]
Double-click the graphic in the right pane
Click the printer icon

Thanks dcompto. Great suggestion. Didn't work though, although Ctrl+Home was set to EditReplace. So now Ctrl+Home is set to StartOfDocument and Ctrl+H is set to EditReplace. But Ctrl+Home still brings up EditReplace.

It's rather intriguing that Ctrl+Home was set to EditReplace even though you had earlier invoked Reset All.

A couple more things to try:

Close and reopen Word then
Help > Detect and Repair
uncheck "Restore my shortcuts while repairing"

If Detect and Repair didn't reset it. Test to see if there are any "Auto" macros in the Normal.dot template. To do so, close Word then hold Shift down while reopening Word. This will ignore any Auto macros. Now, cut and paste text from this Tek-Tips message to the blank Word document. Then press Ctrl+Home. Did it go to the top of the document as it should? If it worked correctly, then Ctrl+Home is being altered through an Auto macro.

Just wondering if harrymossman every got this to work. I just came across this same problem with Word 2000
I did all the steps in this thread but none of them worked. Does anybody else have any ideas?

Under Tools, Options, General tab, clear the check boxes against both WordPerfect options. Then Word's shortcuts will function correctly.
